Kure National Park

Kure National Park in Kastamonu, Turkey

Kure National Park is located in northern Turkey, in the Kure mountain range within Kastamonu Province, near the border with Bartin Province. The park covers part of the Western Black Sea region and is known for its combination of forested areas, karst landforms, and deep canyons. It is one of the best-preserved natural areas in the region, where significant sections remain largely undisturbed.

The park's landscapes include beech and fir forests, limestone cliffs, gorges, streams, waterfalls, and caves. Particularly characteristic of this area are the canyons with steep walls and the viewpoints above them. Thanks to the humid Black Sea climate, nature here appears greener and denser than in many inland parts of Turkey, and the valleys often remain cool even in summer.

The park is of interest to those who choose hiking routes, trips to natural viewpoints, birdwatching, and quiet outdoor recreation. People come here not for urban infrastructure, but for the diversity of the terrain, the silence, and the opportunity to see the mountain forests of northern Turkey in their natural state. The best-known areas are located around the canyons, caves, and waterfalls, access to which depends on the season and road conditions.

The most convenient way to reach the park is by car from Kastamonu or from the Bartin side. The mountain roads are winding, and the distances between points of interest can be considerable, so the trip is usually planned in advance. Before departure, it is worth checking the weather conditions and the accessibility of specific routes and viewpoints.

Canyons, Forest Valleys, and Karst Caves of the Western Black Sea Region

Within the park, you can see different types of natural areas - from dense humid forests to open limestone slopes and narrow gorges. One of the most famous sites in the region is Valla Canyon, which is often mentioned as one of the main natural attractions in the surroundings. Horma Canyon, Ilica Cave, and Ilica Waterfall, located within the Pinarbasi area and often included in one trip, also attract interest.

Visitors usually come here for walks along equipped trails and boardwalks, short hikes to viewpoints, and drives along forest roads between natural sites. Depending on the area, you can walk along wooden paths by the gorges, descend to a waterfall, or stop at a viewpoint above a canyon. In more remote zones, infrastructure is limited, so some routes are suitable only for prepared travelers.

The park is also interesting for the diversity of plant life and wildlife typical of northern Turkey. Mixed forests with beech, fir, pine, and other species can be found here, while mosses, ferns, and undergrowth are especially noticeable in shady and humid places. The morning hours are particularly suitable for quiet nature observation, when there are fewer people in the valleys and the structure of the landscape is more clearly visible.

Near the park, travelers often visit Pinarbasi and the natural sites in its surroundings, while a longer trip can be combined with sightseeing in Kastamonu. The easiest way to get there is by car from Kastamonu or Bartin, as public transport between the separate entrances and viewpoints is limited.
