Meric Bridge
Meric Bridge in Edirne, Turkey
Meric Bridge is located in the western part of Edirne, on the road toward the Karaagac district and the Greek border. It spans the Meric River and is one of the city’s notable historic structures, connected not only with the center of Edirne but also with its borderland surroundings.
The existing bridge was built during the Ottoman period in the 19th century. It is a long stone arch bridge that stands out for its austere architecture and clearly recognizable silhouette above the water. Bridges like this played an important role in travel between Edirne and western destinations, so it is interesting not only as an engineering structure but also as part of the city’s history.
For visitors, Meric Bridge is attractive above all for its views of the river, the banks, and the open space around it. It is a convenient place to stop during a walk through Karaagac, watch the flow of the river, take photographs, and see Edirne beyond its busier tourist quarters.
A trip here is often combined with a visit to the former Karaagac railway station, where a museum and cultural complex now operates. Thanks to this, Meric Bridge is well suited to a short route that combines architecture, river scenery, and historic sites in the western part of the city.

Stone Arches over the River on the Road to Karaagac
On the bridge, its length, the rhythm of its arches, and the massive stone masonry characteristic of late-period Ottoman transport structures are especially noticeable. Different viewpoints offer different perspectives: from the roadway, the line of the bridge is clearly visible, while from the riverbank, its piers and its curve above the river can be seen.
This place is more often chosen for a leisurely walk, a short stop along the way, and photographing river views, especially closer to sunset, when the light is softer and better emphasizes the texture of the stone. There is less urban noise in the surroundings than in the center of Edirne, so it is easier here to feel the scale of the river and the open space.
Nearby is the Karaagac district with the historic building of the former station, as well as the Lausanne Monument, which are convenient to see as part of one trip. The bridge itself is especially interesting for those who want to see not only Edirne’s famous mosques but also its old transport routes.
You can get here from the center of Edirne by taxi, car, or local transport toward Karaagac, after which the bridge is usually easy to reach on foot. Before visiting, it is worth considering the weather and the condition of the riverbank, especially after rain or during periods of higher water levels.
