Mizdakhan Settlement
Mizdakhan Settlement in Nukus, Uzbekistan
The Mizdakhan Settlement is a major archaeological and memorial complex in Karakalpakstan, near Khojeyli and not far from Nukus. It is usually visited as one of the region’s best-known historical sites: across a relatively large area, traces of an ancient settlement, fortifications, a necropolis, and later religious structures have been preserved here.
The complex took shape over many centuries, which is why monuments from different eras are represented on its territory. Mizdakhan is associated with the history of ancient Khorezm, and one of its most prominent landmarks is Gyaur-kala, the remains of an ancient fortress attributed to the pre-Islamic period. Archaeological research shows that this place was used as a residential, defensive, and ritual space.
Today, Mizdakhan is known not only as an archaeological monument but also as an ancient necropolis. Here you can see mausoleums, gravestones, ruins of mud-brick buildings, and structures connected with local religious traditions. Some of the sites are surrounded by legends that are important for understanding local culture, although not all of them are confirmed by historical sources.
For tourists, Mizdakhan is interesting because it offers the opportunity to see several layers of history in one place and better understand the past of the Khorezm oasis. A trip here is often combined with a visit to Nukus and its museums in order to connect archaeology, history, and the culture of Karakalpakstan.

Mizdakhan Settlement: Fortress, Necropolis, and Mausoleums
Monuments from different eras and local traditions have been preserved side by side here.
Ancient fortress, necropolis, and mausoleums on one plateau
On the territory of the complex, visitors usually explore the remains of fortress walls, sections of the ancient settlement, and the necropolis with mausoleums and burials from different periods. The landscape here is open, so the outlines of hills, ruins, and individual structures are clearly visible, and a walk around the site gives an idea of the monument’s scale. It is best to allow enough time for the visit and choose comfortable footwear, as part of the route проходит over dirt ground and uneven surfaces.
One of the most recognizable landmarks is the so-called “World Clock,” a stepped structure associated with local legends. Tourists also pay attention to the mausoleums and pilgrimage sites that have retained significance in the region’s religious tradition. When visiting, it is worth bearing in mind that this is not only an archaeological zone but also a revered place, so calm behavior and a respectful attitude are appropriate.
Mizdakhan is especially interesting for those who want to see not a museum exhibition, but a historical landscape in the open air. From here, it is convenient to continue the trip toward Khojeyli or return to Nukus, where the I. V. Savitsky State Museum of Arts and other city museums are located. Visitors usually get here by car or taxi from Nukus, and the journey takes little time.
