Old City Walls

Old City Walls in Kars

The Old City Walls in Kars are located in the historic part of the city, next to the fortress and the neighborhoods where the multilayered character of local history is especially noticeable. Kars is situated in northeastern Turkey, not far from the routes leading to Erzurum and toward Transcaucasia, so its fortifications had defensive significance for a long time. Today, the surviving sections of the walls are seen as an important part of the urban landscape and help explain how old Kars was laid out.

Fragments of the old fortifications are connected with the elevation on which Kars Fortress stands and with the adjacent buildings of the historic center. Here you can see massive stone masonry, changes in the terrain, and sections where defensive lines once controlled the approaches to the city. Even where the walls have not been fully preserved, they still shape the structure of the space and distinguish the old part of Kars from the newer districts.

For tourists, this place is interesting not only as a separate monument, but also as part of a walking route through the old city. A visit to the walls is usually combined with a visit to the fortress, the bridges over the Kars River, and the streets with stone buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Such a route makes it possible to see how military history, the characteristics of a border city, and the variety of architectural traditions come together in Kars.

During a walk along the old city walls, it is best to pay attention to the details of the masonry, the terrain, and the relationship between the fortifications and the residential quarters. It is clearly visible here that the defensive system was closely linked to the natural elevation and the view of the surroundings. From certain sections, there are views of the historic districts of Kars, the riverbed, and the urban development formed at different times.

A visit to this place is usually not limited to viewing a single line of walls. Tourists walk along the adjacent streets, climb up to the fortress, look at the old stone houses, and look for points from which the overall silhouette of the historic city can best be seen. The walls are especially interesting because here you can see not a separate museum object, but part of a living urban environment, where traces of defensive architecture coexist with everyday city life.

Nearby are Kars Fortress, the stone bridge over the Kars River, and historic quarters with buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The old city is usually reached on foot from the central part of Kars, since the main historical sites are located relatively close to one another.
