Remains of the Edirne Palace
Remains of the Edirne Palace in Edirne, Turkey
The remains of the Edirne Palace are located in the Sarayici district, northwest of central Edirne, in the area between the branches of the Meric River. This was the site of the Edirne Palace, one of the main residences of the Ottoman sultans during the period when Edirne played an important role in the life of the state. Construction of the complex began under Murad II, and it was later expanded and rebuilt.
Originally, it was a large palace ensemble with pavilions, service buildings, gates, gardens, and inner courtyards. What survives today is not the complete buildings, but individual archaeological areas: fragments of walls, building foundations, and restored elements of some parts of the complex. These make it possible to imagine the scale of the former residence, although most of the palace has not survived.
The palace suffered serious destruction in the 19th century, after which the area gradually lost its former appearance. Today, it is an open historical zone and green space where visitors can explore a little-known but important chapter of Ottoman history. The site will be of interest to those who have already seen Edirne’s main landmarks and want to better understand the city’s past beyond its mosques and streets.

The open site preserves traces of the former sultan's residence and its layout.
Archaeological zone of the former sultan's residence in Sarayici
While walking through the area, you can see the remains of the palace complex layout: sections of foundations, wall lines, gates, and the zones where pavilions and gardens were once located. Some of the features are marked and partially restored, so the space is perceived more as an archaeological park than as the ruins of one large building. It is best to allow time for a leisurely walk through the open area.
The site is especially interesting for those who want to imagine what one of the early Ottoman residences outside Istanbul looked like. There is no extensive museum exhibition here, but the location itself helps to understand the layout of the palace area and its connection with the natural surroundings - the river, the island-like terrain, and the roads leading to the historic center of Edirne.
Nearby are historic bridges over the Meric and Tunca, as well as other landmarks of Edirne that can easily be combined into one trip. Sarayici is usually reached by taxi, car, or public transport from the center of Edirne, after which part of the route is covered on foot.
