Rumkale Fortress is located near Halfeti, in Sanliurfa Province, on a high rocky promontory above the waters of the Euphrates. In literature and on maps, the name Romkla is also used. The monument stands in a place where the natural relief itself served as protection, which is why the fortress long retained military and strategic importance.
The fortifications of Rumkale took shape in different eras, from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages. The fortress played a particularly notable role in Armenian church history: in the 12th-13th centuries, it was the residence of the Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Thanks to this, Rumkale was not only a defensive stronghold but also an important religious center of the region.
Today, fragments of the fortress walls, towers, and the ruins of internal structures remain on the site. From the surviving masonry and layout, it is possible to see that the complex developed gradually and combined buildings from different periods. From the water and from the surrounding viewpoints, the position of the fortress on an almost isolated spur, surrounded by the river and steep slopes, is especially clear.
