Sabanci Merkez Mosque

Sabanci Merkez Mosque in Adana, Turkey

Sabanci Merkez Mosque is located in Adana, not far from the city center, on the shore of the Seyhan Reservoir. It is one of the largest mosques in Turkey and one of the most prominent landmarks on Adana’s skyline. Thanks to its waterside location and the open space around it, the building is clearly visible from the promenade and nearby bridges.

The mosque was opened in the late 1990s with the support of the Sabanci family foundation. Its appearance shows a clear influence of classical Ottoman architecture: a central dome, semi-domes, a spacious inner courtyard, and six minarets. This design naturally brings to mind the famous mosques of Istanbul, although the complex has its own scale and urban setting.

Inside, the high prayer hall, large number of windows, marble finishes, decorative tiles, and calligraphy stand out. The space is designed to accommodate a large number of worshippers and remains an active religious site, so it is important for tourists to take prayer times into account, dress modestly, and keep quiet during their visit.

For travelers, the mosque is of interest both as a major modern monument of Islamic architecture and as a convenient point for exploring the Seyhan waterfront. It is often visited together with a walk through central Adana, especially in clear weather, when the domes, minarets, and the building’s reflection in the water are especially visible.

Visitors usually explore the mosque from the outside and from the inner courtyard, where the building’s proportions, dome composition, and tall minarets are especially easy to appreciate. Inside, attention is drawn to the scale of the main hall, the natural lighting, and the combination of stone finishes with traditional ornamentation. It is customary to remove shoes upon entering, and women may need a scarf to cover their heads.

The best time for a calm visit is outside the main prayer hours, when there are fewer visitors in the mosque and it is easier to see the interior. Photography is usually allowed, but it should be done discreetly and without disturbing those who are praying. Before visiting, it is useful to check the visiting rules on site, as access arrangements may change on religious holidays and on Fridays.

Nearby are the Seyhan promenade, Adana Central Park, and the Taskopru stone bridge, so a visit to the mosque can easily be combined with a walk through the city center. From the central districts of Adana, people usually get here by taxi, city bus, or on foot if you are already near the Seyhan River.
