Sirkeci Railway Station
Sirkeci Railway Station in Istanbul, Turkey
Sirkeci Railway Station is located in the Fatih district, in the historic center of Istanbul, near the Golden Horn waterfront and the Eminonu quarter. It opened at the end of the 19th century as the main terminus of the Ottoman Empire’s European railway lines. For many passengers arriving in the city from the west, their introduction to Istanbul began here.
The station building is one of the notable examples of the architecture of its time. The project was prepared by the German architect August Jachmund, and the appearance of the building combines European techniques with orientalist details characteristic of late Ottoman architecture. The facade is distinguished by arched windows, decorative masonry, turrets, and striking symmetry, while the interiors have preserved stained glass and arched passageways.
Today, Sirkeci no longer plays its former role as an international railway hub, but it remains an important historical landmark. People come here to see one of the city’s most famous station buildings, associated with the era of long-distance travel between Istanbul and Europe. Next to the station stands a vintage locomotive that often attracts the attention of visitors.
For tourists, Sirkeci is interesting not only in itself but also as part of a walking route through old Istanbul. From here, it is convenient to continue on to Eminonu Square, Galata Bridge, Gulhane Park, and Topkapi Palace. Even a short stop at the station makes it easier to imagine what the city was like during the period of active rail connections with Europe.

Historic station with an orientalist facade and stained glass
When visiting Sirkeci, it is worth paying attention to the design of the main facade and the interior details that have preserved the character of the late 19th century. Here you can see tall arched windows, colorful stained glass, decorative stone and brick elements, as well as halls in which the connection between station architecture and the era of international trains can be felt. This place is especially interesting for those who love urban history and architecture.
Today, people come here primarily not for long-distance travel, but for the building itself and its historical context. On the station grounds and nearby, you can see the commemorative locomotive and take photographs of the facade, then walk through the neighboring streets, where the rhythm of the old transport hub can still be strongly felt. The station remains an active railway point, but for tourists it is above all a monument to the city’s past infrastructure.
Nearby are Eminonu, Sirkeci Marmaray Station, Gulhane Park, the Istanbul Archaeological Museum, and Topkapi Palace, so a visit can easily be combined with a walk through the historic center. You can get here by taking tram line T1 to the Sirkeci stop or by walking from Eminonu in a few minutes.
