Surp Khach Church
Surp Khach Church on Akdamar Island, Kars, Turkey
Surp Khach Church, known as the Church of the Holy Cross, is located on Akdamar Island in Lake Van, in southeastern Turkey. Although Kars is specified in the task, the monument itself is not located in the city of Kars or its surroundings, but in Van Province. It is one of the most famous Armenian churches of the medieval period preserved in present-day Turkey.
The church was built in the 10th century during the Armenian Kingdom of Vaspurakan and was part of a palace-monastic complex. Its main feature is the exterior stone reliefs covering the facades. They depict biblical scenes, figures of people, animals, birds, and decorative floral motifs. For this reason, the church is especially interesting for those who want to see not only architecture, but also a sculptural program that was rare for its time.
Inside, fragments of paintings have been partially preserved, and the architectural composition itself differs noticeably from many other Armenian churches of the same period. The church is notable for its combination of expressive exterior decoration, historical context, and isolated island location. For tourists, it is an opportunity to see an important monument of Armenian art and at the same time visit one of the most famous islands on Lake Van.

The church is known for its stone carvings and views of Lake Van.
Medieval Reliefs on an Island in the Middle of Lake Van
The main thing visitors usually notice is the stone carving on the outer walls. The reliefs are best viewed slowly by walking around the church: scenes from the Old and New Testaments, figures of animals, and decorative ornaments appear in sequence on the facades. Such an extensive exterior sculptural decoration is rare for an Armenian church of this period, which makes the church especially interesting for those who study medieval art.
Inside, you can see the remains of wall paintings and pay attention to the compact yet carefully designed interior space. A visit is usually combined with a walk around Akdamar Island: from its shores there are wide views of Lake Van and the surrounding mountains. It is worth keeping in mind that the impression of the place depends not only on viewing the building itself, but also on the boat trip.
You can get here by boat from the shore of Lake Van, usually from the piers in the Gevas area. Nearby along the route are Lake Van, coastal viewpoints, and the village of Gevas itself, which often serves as the starting point for the trip to the island.
