The Temple of Athena is located on the acropolis of ancient Assos above the village of Behramkale, near Ayvacik in Canakkale Province. The sanctuary stands on a hilltop at an altitude of about 238 meters above sea level. The site offers wide views of the Edremit Gulf and the island of Lesbos, so visitors come here not only for the ancient ruins but also for the coastal panorama.
The temple belongs to the Archaic period and is usually dated to the end of the 6th century BC. It is a Doric peripteral temple, one of the early and notable monuments of Greek architecture in Asia Minor. Originally, the structure was surrounded by 34 columns in a 6 x 13 arrangement, and today its scale is recalled by the preserved foundations, the stylobate, and several restored columns.
The monument is especially significant for its sculpted frieze with mythological scenes, which was unusual for Doric temples of this period in the region. The discovered fragments are now kept in major museum collections, including the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, the Louvre, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Even without its full decoration, the temple remains an important part of the Assos archaeological complex and helps convey the appearance of the ancient city.

The temple is usually reached on foot from the village of Behramkale, which visitors reach by road from Ayvacik; from there, the route continues uphill over paved and in some places uneven sections.
It is best to choose comfortable footwear for the visit, as the site has many rocky and open areas without shade. Visitors usually allow at least an hour to see the temple itself and the nearby ruins, and if the walk is combined with the theater and the fortress remains, more time will be needed.
