Ugam-Chatkal National Park

Ugam-Chatkal National Park in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Ugam-Chatkal National Park is located in the northeast of Uzbekistan, in the mountainous part of the Tashkent Region, not far from Tashkent. It lies within the Western Tien Shan and includes areas with a noticeable altitudinal change of landscapes - from foothill valleys to high-mountain slopes and ridges. The park was established in 1992 on the basis of the Chatkal Biosphere Reserve and adjacent natural territories.

It is one of the largest protected natural areas in the country, preserving mountain ecosystems, forests, river valleys, and areas of alpine vegetation. Juniper forests, shrub communities, mountain meadows, and rocky high-mountain zones are widespread here. This natural diversity makes the park an important area for the protection of the flora and fauna of the Western Tien Shan.

The park is of interest to tourists primarily for its mountain scenery, the opportunity to see different natural zones within a single trip, and to follow routes surrounded by largely untouched nature. In some areas, rare species of animals and birds can be found, so part of the territory has a stricter protection regime. Visiting conditions depend on the specific zone, and it is worth checking route accessibility in advance before the trip.

Most often, people come here in late spring, summer, and early autumn, when roads and trails are usually more accessible and the weather is suitable for walks and trips to the mountains. For travelers from Tashkent, the park is convenient as a one-day destination or for a longer trip with stops in the mountainous areas of the region.

Mountain routes, juniper forests, and protected valleys

Within the park, you can see mountain rivers, gorges, forested slopes with juniper, and areas of open meadows at different elevations. In zones accessible to visitors, tourists usually choose hiking, trips to viewpoints, отдых by the water, and routes along mountain roads. The format of the visit depends on the season, road conditions, and restrictions related to nature protection.

For the trip, it is important to keep in mind that the national park brings together territories with different usage regimes. Some areas are suitable for organized recreation and short nature trips, while others belong to specially protected zones where access may be restricted. Before setting out, it is useful to check the visiting rules, especially if a trip to remote mountain areas is planned.

Travelers often combine a visit to the park with a trip to the Charvak Reservoir and to the mountain areas of Chimgan and Beldersay, which are located in the same part of the Tashkent Region. From Tashkent, people usually get there by car or as part of an excursion to the region’s mountain destinations.

The best time to explore the accessible routes is from late spring to early autumn. During this period, it is easier to travel along mountain roads, and the elevation changes and shifts in natural zones are especially noticeable during the trip.
