Uzungol Lake
Uzungol Lake in Trabzon, Turkey - the Caykara Valley
Uzungol Lake is located in the Caykara district, about 100 kilometers south of central Trabzon. It lies in a narrow mountain valley in the Eastern Black Sea region, among forested slopes and the humid, cool climate typical of this part of northeastern Turkey. The village of the same name is located nearby, and the lake is usually perceived together with it as a single tourist destination.
The body of water is of natural origin: it formed after landslide masses blocked the valley and held back the water of a mountain stream. For Trabzon Province, this landscape is especially remarkable, since the region is known primarily for its rivers, steep slopes, and dense vegetation rather than for large lakes. Therefore, Uzungol stands out noticeably against the surrounding landscape.
Today, people come here for walks by the water, panoramic views of the mountain valley, and to experience the nature of the Caykara district. The lake is interesting for those who want to see a different side of Turkey's Black Sea coast - not maritime, but highland, with mists, coniferous forests, and changing weather. A trip here is often combined with a route around the surroundings of Trabzon and visits to mountain villages.
Uzungol is suitable both for a short one-day stop and for a more relaxed stay with an overnight in the village. The place is especially popular in the warm season, when it is more convenient to walk through the valley and climb to viewpoints, but even in the cooler part of the year the lake remains a popular natural attraction of the region.

The main walking area runs along the shore and through the village, where views open up over the water, the slopes, and the mosque, which has become one of the recognizable features of the local landscape. Paths are arranged around the lake, there are places for short stops and viewing points, and in good weather visitors often climb higher up the slopes to see the valley as a whole.
People usually come here not for swimming, but for walking, photography, and a trip to a cool mountain area. In the surroundings there are forest sections, small streams, and roads leading to higher pastures and viewpoints. The weather changes quickly here, so even in summer it is useful to bring warm and waterproof clothing.
There are cafés, small shops, and accommodation facilities in the village, so the visit can easily be extended for a few hours or overnight. Nearby, visitors also go to mountain plateaus and the rural areas of Caykara, where they come for wider views of the Black Sea mountains. From Trabzon, Uzungol is usually reached by car, transfer, or excursion along the mountain road through the inland parts of the province.
