Yerkopru Waterfall

Yerkopru Waterfall in Mersin, Turkey

Yerkopru Waterfall is located in the Silifke district of Mersin Province, in the inland part of the region, far from the sea coast. It is a well-known natural site on the Goksu River, where karst processes have shaped an unusual landscape with underground water flow, spring outlets, and a natural limestone bridge. The name Yerkopru comes from the Turkish Yerkopru and means "earth bridge," which is directly related to the structure of this place.

The main feature of the waterfall is the combination of rock mass, clear water, and karst formations. The river flow passes through limestone rocks and emerges at the foot of the cliffs, creating a waterfall about 30 meters high. Around it there are travertine areas, wet stone surfaces, and dense vegetation, thanks to which the water retains a cooler microclimate than in the open parts of the valley.

For tourists, Yerkopru is interesting not only because of the waterfall itself, but also because of the opportunity to see one of the characteristic karst landscapes of southern Turkey. The area is adapted for a short visit: there are walking paths and viewing points from which it is convenient to observe the riverbed, rocks, and areas of turquoise-green water. People come here especially often during the warm season, when the contrast between the hot weather and the coolness near the water is felt more strongly.

Yerkopru is usually visited during trips through the inland parts of Mersin Province, combining a stop at the waterfall with a drive through mountain and river valleys. This place is suitable for those who want to see a natural site without a long route and get acquainted with the features of the local landscape during one short walk.

At the site, what stands out most is not only the falling water, but also the structure of the landscape itself. Visitors come here to observe the water emerging from beneath the rocks, the light-colored limestone surfaces, travertine areas, and small viewing platforms above the riverbed. The color of the water can change depending on the season, lighting, and flow level, but most often it looks very clear.

The usual format of a visit is a short walk through the equipped area with stops at viewing points. The paths allow visitors to approach different angles of the waterfall and see how the river passes through the karst section. In damp and shaded places, it is worth walking carefully: stones and walkways may be slippery, especially after rain or during periods of stronger water flow.

A trip here is often combined with visits to the natural and historical sites of the Silifke district, including the Goksu River valley and other places in the inland parts of Mersin Province. The waterfall is usually reached by car from Silifke along local roads toward the inland areas.
