The Zarafshan Nature Reserve is located east of Samarkand, in the floodplain of the Zarafshan River, within the Bulungur and Jambay districts of the Samarkand Region. It was established to protect tugai natural complexes - a special type of floodplain vegetation typical of the river valleys of Central Asia. For tourists, it is above all a place where they can see a landscape rare for the region, noticeably different from the surrounding dry plains.
The reserve was founded in 1975. Its territory stretches along the right bank of the Zarafshan, and the proximity of the river defines the entire character of the local nature. In the conditions of a hot and arid climate, the floodplain preserves areas of tree and shrub vegetation that serve as shelter for birds and small animals.
More than 200 plant species have been recorded in the reserve. The flora is based on tugai communities, which depend on river moisture and groundwater. The fauna is represented by birds, rodents, and small predators, and the reserve itself is important for preserving the natural ecosystems of the Zarafshan Valley.
