Zeytinli Island

Zeytinli Island in Erdek, Turkey

Zeytinli Island is located off the coast of Erdek in the southern part of the Sea of Marmara, near the Kapidag Peninsula. It is clearly visible from the coastal part of Erdek and from the direction of Ocaklar, which makes it a notable part of the local seascape for many travelers. It is a small island with natural relief and Mediterranean vegetation typical of the region’s coastline.

The island’s shoreline is mostly rocky, so it is perceived primarily as a natural site rather than a developed area for extended recreation. People do not usually come here for infrastructure: you should not expect beach facilities, cafés, or regular tourist services on the island. It is precisely because of this that Zeytinli preserves its calm, almost untouched character.

For tourists, the island is of interest mainly as a place to observe from the shore and from the water. It is often viewed during walks along the Erdek promenade and, in the summer season, from boats and private motorboats heading into the coastal waters. At sunset and in clear weather, the island looks especially striking against the backdrop of the Sea of Marmara and the hills of Kapidag.

Zeytinli Island will suit those who want to see a quieter side of the Erdek resort area. It is not a separate excursion point with a full program, but rather a natural landmark and part of the coastal landscape that complements a trip along this stretch of Turkey’s coastline.

Zeytinli Island

Rocky island opposite the Erdek coast

Zeytinli is most often perceived as a place for brief sea views, photography, and coastal walks overlooking the open sea. From the shore, you can make out its rocky outlines, patches of shrub vegetation, and overall relief typical of the small islands of the Sea of Marmara. It is a good landmark for those exploring the coastal part of Erdek not only for the beaches, but also for the natural scenery.

During boat trips, the island can be seen more closely, allowing visitors to appreciate the shape of its shores and the nature of its coastal rocks. Landing depends on weather conditions, the type of vessel, and local restrictions, so it is best to check in advance with private carriers or organizers of sea excursions. There is usually no regular passenger service to the island, and an independent visit requires prior preparation.

The best time for observation is on clear days with good visibility, when the island stands out distinctly against the water and the Kapidag coast. In the evening, it is often photographed from the shoreline, especially from the Erdek and Ocaklar areas. Nearby are the beaches of Erdek, coastal walking areas, and routes toward the Kapidag Peninsula, which can conveniently be combined into one trip.

The easiest way to reach the viewing points is from the center of Erdek: city streets and the promenade lead to the coast, while seasonal private boats and motorboats are usually used for viewing from the water.
