Zigana Mountain Range
Zigana Mountain Range in Gumushane, Turkey
The Zigana Mountain Range is located in northeastern Turkey, between Gumushane and Trabzon, within the Pontic Mountains system. For travelers, it is one of the main mountain areas on the route from inland Anatolia to the Black Sea coast. The range and the Zigana Pass have long served as a natural route through the highlands and still remain an important link between the interior regions and the Black Sea coast.
The landscape here is typically mountainous: steep slopes, forested areas, gorges, fog, and cloud cover that often change visibility quickly. At different elevations, the character of nature also changes - lower down there are dense forests, while higher up more rugged alpine areas open up. In summer, the Zigana area is usually cooler than the coast, and in winter snow lingers longer, especially in the upper part of the range.
This area is associated with the Zigana Pass and the Zigana road tunnel, opened in 2023, which provide year-round transport between the provinces of Gumushane and Trabzon. For tourists, Zigana is primarily interesting for its mountain roads, viewpoints, nature walks, and the chance to see one of the characteristic landscapes of the Eastern Black Sea region. People come here for the cool air, forests, and wide views of the mountain slopes and valleys.

Zigana Mountain Range: pass, tunnel, and regional views
Mountain roads, forests, and changing weather at different elevations are especially noticeable here.
Forested slopes, the pass, and scenic roads of the Eastern Black Sea region
The Zigana area is suitable for drives along mountain roads, short stops at scenic viewpoints, and walks in the forest zone. Here you can see how the terrain changes as you ascend: from gentler slopes and tree vegetation to open highland areas. In clear weather, valleys and the lines of mountain ridges are clearly visible from some points, while in cloudy weather the area looks especially characteristic of this region - with low fog and rapidly changing conditions.
In the cold season, winter activities are possible in the surroundings if snow conditions allow. Even outside the active holiday season, people come here for the road through the mountains itself and for the contrast between the Black Sea coast and the inland regions. This area is best suited to those interested in natural landscapes, drives along mountain routes, and a cool climate.
Nearby are the Zigana Pass, the Zigana Tunnel, and routes toward Trabzon and the city of Gumushane, from where it is convenient to continue traveling around the region. People usually get here via the road between Gumushane and Trabzon, using the pass or the highway through the tunnel as reference points.
