Zilkale Fortress is located in Rize Province, deep in the Firtina Valley, among the forested slopes of the Pontic Mountains. It stands on a high rock above the gorge and is considered one of the most famous medieval fortifications in northeastern Turkey. It is usually dated to the late medieval period, and its present appearance is associated with the 13th-14th centuries.
The location of the fortress was not chosen by chance. From this point, it was convenient to observe the road passing through the valley and control the route through the mountainous area. Zilkale was part of a system of local fortifications that protected communications between settlements and important sections of routes in the mountains.
Sections of the outer walls, towers, and interior rooms built into the complex rocky terrain have survived to this day. The fortress is interesting not only for its history, but also for the way its architecture was adapted to the narrow and steep site. The viewpoints offer views of the Firtina River, dense forest, and the slopes of the valley.
