Zilkale Fortress
Zilkale Fortress in Rize, Turkey
Zilkale Fortress is located in Rize Province, deep in the Firtina Valley, among the forested slopes of the Pontic Mountains. It stands on a high rock above the gorge and is considered one of the most famous medieval fortifications in northeastern Turkey. It is usually dated to the late medieval period, and its present appearance is associated with the 13th-14th centuries.
The location of the fortress was not chosen by chance. From this point, it was convenient to observe the road passing through the valley and control the route through the mountainous area. Zilkale was part of a system of local fortifications that protected communications between settlements and important sections of routes in the mountains.
Sections of the outer walls, towers, and interior rooms built into the complex rocky terrain have survived to this day. The fortress is interesting not only for its history, but also for the way its architecture was adapted to the narrow and steep site. The viewpoints offer views of the Firtina River, dense forest, and the slopes of the valley.
For tourists, Zilkale usually becomes part of a trip through the Firtina Valley together with the Ayder area and other natural sites of Rize. People come here for the medieval ruins, the mountain landscape, and the panoramas, which change noticeably throughout the day because of fog and rapidly changing weather.

On the fortress grounds, visitors can see stone walls, towers, and passages between the inner sections. Even in its preserved state, it is easy to notice how the fortification was adapted to the steep rock: some of the walls follow the natural relief, and the viewpoints are oriented toward the valley and its approaches. A visit usually does not take much time, but it requires caution on the stone and uneven sections.
The main thing visitors see is the combination of medieval fortification and mountain scenery. From the upper sections, there are views of the gorge, the bed of the Firtina River, and the densely forested slopes. In cloudy weather, fog can quickly change visibility, so the impression of the visit depends greatly on the state of the sky and the season.
A trip to Zilkale is often combined with a route through the Firtina Valley: nearby are the Ayder area, historic stone bridges, and sections of the river popular for walking and rafting. This is convenient for those who want to see both a medieval fortification and the characteristic mountain landscapes of Rize in one day.
The fortress is usually reached by road through the Firtina Valley by car or as part of an excursion from Rize and the surrounding resort areas. Before the trip, it is worth considering that the mountain road is winding, and it is best to have comfortable shoes on site because of the stone surface and changes in elevation.
