Ancient Aphrodisias
Ancient Aphrodisias in Adana, Turkey: an ancient archaeological complex
Ancient Aphrodisias is an ancient archaeological complex in southwestern Turkey, known primarily as one of the important centers of art and worship in Caria. The city received the name of Aphrodite in the Hellenistic period and in antiquity was closely associated with the veneration of the goddess. Today, visitors come here for the well-preserved ruins, which make it possible to imagine the layout of a large Roman-era city.
A special place in the history of Aphrodisias was occupied by the local school of sculpture. Craftsmen worked with high-quality local marble, and their works were known far beyond the region. Thanks to this, the archaeological complex is valued not only as a collection of ruins, but also as an important source of information about the art of Asia Minor in the Greek and Roman periods.
The site preserves the remains of monumental public structures, including a theater, stadium, temple buildings, and civic buildings. Traces of later changes connected with the spread of Christianity are also visible, when the city gradually changed its religious character. This historical layering makes Aphrodisias especially interesting for those who want to see how an ancient center developed over several eras.
At the entrance to the archaeological zone there is a museum displaying sculptures, reliefs, tombstones, imperial busts, and other finds from the excavations. Visiting both the museum and the site itself helps to better understand the significance of Aphrodisias and to see not only individual monuments, but the entire urban ensemble. For travelers, this is one of those ancient sites where history is read quite clearly even without special preparation.

Ancient Aphrodisias - museum and ruins of an ancient city
Here you can see the traces of a Roman city and a local school of sculpture.
Marble sculpture, theater, and stadium of the ancient city
During a walk through Aphrodisias, you can see one of the most expressive ensembles of a Roman city in Turkey. The main urban zones are clearly visible here: the theater, stadium, agora, monumental gate, and areas of residential and public development. Many come here precisely for the combination of large-scale ruins and sculptures found on site, connected with the well-known local school of sculpture.
The museum next to the entrance deserves special attention. Its exhibition includes statues, portrait busts, architectural details, sarcophagi, and reliefs found during excavations. After visiting the museum, it is easier to perceive the site itself: you can relate individual works to the space of the city, the temples, squares, and public buildings for which they were created.
It is best to allow several hours for the visit and bring water with you, especially in the hot season, since the area is quite large and open. Near Aphrodisias, travelers often also visit Pamukkale and ancient Hierapolis if they are planning a route through the western part of Turkey. People usually get here by car or as part of an excursion from the nearest cities in the region.
