Ancient Side
Ancient Side in Side, Turkey
Ancient Side is located in the historic center of Side, on a small peninsula on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, about 75 km east of Antalya. It is a large archaeological area where ancient ruins stand alongside the streets of a modern resort town. Thanks to this layout, a walk through the center of Side introduces visitors both to the modern waterfront and to monuments from ancient times.
The city already existed in antiquity and developed especially during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. To this day, fragments of the fortification walls, the main gate, colonnaded streets, the agora, the theater, and the remains of seaside temples have been preserved here. Many structures survive as ruins, but even from them it is possible to imagine the scale and layout of the ancient city.
One of the important buildings of the complex is the former Roman baths, which today house the Side Archaeological Museum. Its exhibition features finds from the area around the city: sculpture, sarcophagi, reliefs, inscriptions, and architectural details. A visit to the museum helps to better understand the purpose of the ruins found throughout the historic center.
Ancient Side is of interest to those who want to combine a walk by the sea with sightseeing of archaeological monuments without long journeys. People come here to see one of the most famous ancient complexes on Turkey’s southern coast, walk along ancient streets, and look at the preserved traces of a city that for centuries was an important port of the region.

The theater, agora, and seaside temples within the ancient city
On the territory of Ancient Side, visitors usually explore the main gate, sections of ancient colonnaded streets, and the ruins of public buildings. Particularly notable is the ancient Roman-era theater, which was one of the largest structures in the city. Nearby was the agora, a commercial and public square where the remains of a circular temple associated with the cult of Tyche have been preserved.
By the sea are the ruins of the temples of Apollo and Athena, one of the most recognizable parts of the archaeological zone. Parts of the foundation and several restored columns have been preserved here, and nearby there is a view of the harbor and the coastline. This part of the ancient city is well suited for a leisurely walk, especially if you want to combine sightseeing of the monuments with access to the waterfront.
The Side Archaeological Museum is located in the building of the Roman baths and complements a walk through the ruins. Inside, you can see statues, sarcophagi, fragments of decoration, inscriptions, and items found during excavations. Nearby are the harbor area of old Side, the waterfront, cafés, and small city beaches.
You can get here from Antalya, Manavgat, and neighboring resort areas by bus or car, after which it is more convenient to continue on foot through the center of Side. It is worth choosing comfortable footwear for the visit, as a significant part of the route passes along stone paths and sections with uneven surfaces.
