Side Turkey travel guide: Temple of Apollo

Side, Turkey

Side is a coastal settlement in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey, in Antalya Province on the Mediterranean Sea near Manavgat. Set on coastal terrain, its historic core occupies a small peninsula, giving the town beaches on both the eastern and western sides.

Side was an important ancient port city in Pamphylia and later developed strongly under Roman rule. Those historical layers remain visible in monuments including the Ancient Theater of Side, the Temple of Apollo, the city walls, the Monumental Gate, the colonnaded streets, and the Nymphaeum, creating a concentrated Roman archaeological landscape within the old town.

Roman-era remains, beach access, and a functioning resort center come together here in one destination. That makes Side well suited to holidays or a travel guide centered on combining archaeological walking, seafront time, and outdoor dining in the same place. It also works as a practical base for trips that mix beach time with access to historic remains.

The main visitor areas are the ancient peninsula, the harbor area, West Beach, and East Beach. The peninsula holds the compact, pedestrian-oriented historic core and archaeological zone, while the harbor is a focal point for walking, dining, and sunset views. West Beach is associated with resort facilities and a broad sandy shoreline, and East Beach lies closer to the archaeological peninsula. Antalya Airport is the main air gateway, Side is commonly reached by road transfer through the Manavgat area, and dolmus minibuses and taxis connect it with Manavgat and nearby resort zones.

Side has a Mediterranean climate, with very hot dry summers and milder wetter winters. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for combining archaeological walking with outdoor dining and swimming. Peak summer afternoons are less suitable for visiting the ruins because the exposed stone areas become especially hot, and winter is less reliable for beach weather.

Walking Side's peninsula and harbor

Stone remains, pedestrian streets, and Roman monuments define the experience through the historic core. Visitors pass through the archaeological zone by the city walls, the Monumental Gate, the colonnaded streets, and the Nymphaeum, with the Ancient Theater of Side standing as one of the principal surviving Roman structures in the old town. At the harbor, the Temple of Apollo stands beside the sea and remains one of Side's most recognizable landmarks, while the ancient port setting is central to what to see and other attractions in the town.

The Side Museum is housed in a restored ancient bath building and displays finds from the local archaeological area. Around the small peninsula, the Mediterranean coastline provides the main natural setting, with sandy beaches on both sides and open sea views along the waterfront. The harbor area functions as a seafront promenade and tourist harbor, and it is a focal point for walking, dining, and sunset views, especially around the Temple of Apollo.

Beyond viewing monuments, visitors walk through the ancient city and harbor, swim and sunbathe on West Beach or East Beach, and dine in the seafront resort center. Side is also used as a base for access through the Manavgat area, while the harbor supports excursion boats. Dining in the area includes Turkish cuisine and Mediterranean seafood, and grilled fish is one specific local dish supported by the local food profile, alongside meze and piyaz as things to do around meals and waterfront evenings.

Who Side suits best

Is Side worth visiting? Yes. It suits travelers who want Roman ruins, a compact walkable setting, and Mediterranean beach access in the same place. What sets Side apart from a simpler beach resort or a separate archaeological site is the direct combination of major ruins, a working tourist harbor, and sandy beaches within a very small area. The range of things to do includes walking the historic peninsula, visiting the theater and museum, watching sunset by the Temple of Apollo, and spending time on the beaches.

Best time to visit Side is spring or autumn, when conditions are more comfortable for combining archaeological walks with outdoor dining and swimming. Summer brings heavier tourist traffic and very hot midday conditions around the exposed ruins, while winter is milder but wetter and less dependable for beach weather.
