Ankhor Canal

Ankhor Canal in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Ankhor Canal is one of the most notable water canals in Tashkent, running through the central part of the city and linking different urban districts into a single water system. Its length is about 23.5 kilometers. For Tashkent, Ankhor is important not only as an element of engineering infrastructure, but also as a well-recognized part of the urban environment, along which walking and green areas have developed.

Historically, the canal played a significant role in the irrigation and water supply of the city. In the 19th century, it served as a landmark between old Tashkent and the territories that were later actively built up. Over time, the practical importance of the canal has remained, but at the same time its banks have become part of the everyday life of the city, where transport arteries, public spaces, and recreation areas are combined.

For tourists, Ankhor is interesting as an opportunity to see Tashkent outside the museum format - through its layout, embankments, bridges, and proximity to well-known city landmarks. Near the canal are the Courage Memorial Complex, Pakhtakor Stadium, and other places in central Tashkent. A walk along Ankhor makes it possible to better understand how the city’s historic water system, modern development, and green areas coexist.

Urban canal with embankments, bridges, and walking areas

Ankhor is perceived not as a separate natural attraction, but as part of the everyday appearance of Tashkent. Along different sections of the canal, you can see reinforced embankments, bridges, walking paths, and green strips along the water. Depending on the location, the shoreline looks different: in some places it is a lively urban stretch near roads, and in others it is a calmer space for a short walk.

Visitors usually come here to walk along the water, look at city panoramas, and combine the stroll with visiting nearby places. The canal is especially convenient for a leisurely introduction to the central part of Tashkent, because along its line it is easy to see how the urban landscape changes - from public spaces to residential and transport environments. It is more of a route for walking and observing the city than a separate point for a long visit.

Nearby are the Courage Memorial Complex, Pakhtakor Stadium, and the area near Alisher Navoi National Park. Different sections of Ankhor can be reached by taxi, bus, or metro, using central Tashkent and the stops closest to the desired part of the canal as reference points.
