Capital Tashkent

Capital Tashkent is the central administrative region of Uzbekistan, associated with the country's largest city and its capital, Tashkent. It is the republic's main political, cultural, and transport hub, with a large share of domestic and international routes passing through it. For many travelers, a trip to Uzbekistan begins here, since Tashkent is a convenient place for first walks, museum visits, and onward journeys around the country.

The city’s history spans many centuries. In medieval sources, this area was known as Shash and Chach and served as an important stop along Central Asian trade routes. The modern appearance of Tashkent was largely shaped in the 20th century, especially after the 1966 earthquake, when much of the city was rebuilt. As a result, old mahallas, Islamic monuments, Soviet-era buildings, and modern public and business districts now stand side by side in the capital.

The region is located in the northeast of Uzbekistan, near the foothills of the Western Tian Shan. Most of the territory is made up of urban and suburban lowlands, with residential neighborhoods, broad avenues, canals, parks, and squares. Outside the dense built-up areas, the route toward the mountains makes the capital region convenient for short nature outings, although its main tourist appeal lies in the city itself.

The main settlement in the region is Tashkent. Among the best-known parts of the city for visitors are Old Tashkent, the Chorsu Bazaar district, Independence Square, Amir Temur Square, and the area around the Anhor Canal. These places reveal different sides of the capital, from historic urban neighborhoods and religious architecture to wide avenues, museums, theaters, and modern public spaces.

Capital Tashkent is known for its architectural variety, museum collections, theater scene, artistically designed metro stations, and major markets. The region is well suited to cultural, educational, family, and food-focused travel. It is also often chosen as a starting point for trips to the mountain areas of Tashkent Region and to other historic cities of Uzbekistan.

The climate is sharply continental: summers are hot and dry, while winters are usually relatively mild, though brief cold spells can occur. The most comfortable seasons to visit are spring and autumn, when it is easier to explore the city on foot and plan outdoor excursions.

Capital Tashkent and the Hast-Imam Complex

Among the key sights in the capital region, an important place belongs to the historic part of Tashkent. Here you will find the Hast-Imam Complex, which brings together religious and architectural monuments linked to the city's Islamic heritage. Nearby is the Chorsu Bazaar, one of the capital's best-known markets, as well as the Old Tashkent neighborhoods, where the traditional urban environment with mahallas and artisan streets is best preserved.

Among the city's most visited attractions are the State Museum of History of Uzbekistan, the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan, the Museum of Applied Arts, as well as theaters, concert venues, and exhibition spaces. Tashkent's metro is a highlight in itself, known for its station designs and its convenience for independent travel around the city. Good places for walks include Independence Square, Amir Temur Square, the canal embankments, and the city's large park areas.

There are no UNESCO World Heritage sites within the capital region itself, but Tashkent is often used as a convenient base for further travel around Uzbekistan. From the capital, it is easy to plan trips to Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva, as well as shorter outings to the mountain and reservoir areas of Tashkent Region. As a result, the region combines a rich urban program with the chance to expand a trip without complicated logistics.

Local cuisine is based on wider Uzbek traditions, but in Tashkent it is especially easy to experience them in different settings, from bazaars and teahouses to modern restaurants. Travelers usually try plov, samsa, kebabs, lagman, manti, and fresh baked goods. Traditions of hospitality, tea culture, and family-style dining remain an important part of city life, while concerts, fairs, and cultural events are often held during holidays.

Capital Tashkent has the most developed transport infrastructure in the country, with an international airport, railway stations, a metro system, city public transport, and major road links to other regions of Uzbekistan.
