Bridge over the Tigris River

Bridge over the Tigris River in Diyarbakir, Turkey

The bridge over the Tigris River, known as the Ten-Arched Bridge, is located south of the center of Diyarbakir and is considered one of the city's most recognizable historic crossings. It connects the banks of the Tigris in an area where important roads once passed and is among the notable monuments of medieval engineering architecture in southeastern Turkey.

The existing stone bridge is usually dated to the 11th century, although a crossing at this location was probably used earlier as well. The structure is associated with the Marwanid period. Local black basalt was used for its construction - the same material that was widely used in the fortress walls and other historic buildings of Diyarbakir.

The bridge's main feature is its long row of large arches, which make it easily recognizable against the river valley. Even though today it is perceived primarily as a historic monument, the bridge helps illustrate how the medieval route to the city was arranged and what role the crossing over the Tigris played in the life of the region.

For tourists, this place is interesting not only as an architectural monument but also as part of Diyarbakir's historical landscape. From the bridge and the riverbanks, there are views of the river, basalt structures, and the surroundings of the old city, so people come here both for a walk and to get acquainted with the city's history beyond the fortress walls.

Today, visitors can observe the massive stone masonry, the elongated silhouette of the bridge, and the characteristic arched spans that gave the structure its well-known name. The black basalt is especially noticeable in side lighting, when the texture of the stone and the difference between the main structures and later repairs can be clearly seen.

A walk across the bridge allows visitors to see the Tigris from different points and notice how medieval builders adapted the shape of the piers and arches to the river's flow. This place is often chosen for a visit, photographs, and a short stop on the way from central Diyarbakir to the southern outskirts of the city.

Nearby are the Diyarbakir fortress walls, the old city of Sur, and the Hevsel Gardens, which are included in the city's historical landscape. Together, these places provide a more complete picture of how Diyarbakir and its surroundings were arranged in different eras.

The bridge is usually reached by car or taxi from central Diyarbakir; the journey takes little time. Before traveling, it is worth checking the current access conditions and the state of the approaches to the river, especially after seasonal rains.
