Burgazada Island Mosque
Burgazada Island Mosque

Burgazada Island Mosque

Burgazada Island Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey

The Burgazada Island Mosque is located on Burgazada, one of the Princes' Islands in Istanbul, in a residential area not far from the waterfront and the pier. It is the island's main active mosque, usually noticed during a walk from the ferry terminal to the inner neighborhoods.

The building was constructed in 1953 and opened in 1954. It is associated with a commemorative date - the 500th anniversary of the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. For a small island, this is a comparatively late religious structure, reflecting not Ottoman classicism but rather the architectural approach of the mid-20th century.

The mosque stands out for its octagonal volume and dome. The project was designed by architect Arif Burhan. In appearance, it is a compact and restrained building that fits well into the scale of Burgazada and differs from the older mosques of Istanbul.

For tourists, it is an interesting stop while exploring the island: here you can see one of Burgazada's landmarks, pay attention to the local architecture, and feel the calmer, everyday rhythm of life on the Princes' Islands outside the central districts of Istanbul.

It serves as a landmark of the island's built environment and a place of regular prayer.

The mosque is especially interesting for its shape: instead of an elongated rectangular plan, an octagonal volume covered by a dome is used here. This silhouette is clearly visible from nearby streets and from the approach by sea, so the building serves as a noticeable landmark near the island's waterfront area.

Visitors usually view the mosque from the outside while walking around Burgazada, and if they observe the rules of conduct and prayer times, they may look inside. As in other active mosques in Turkey, it is advisable to choose modest clothing and keep in mind that tourist visits may be limited during worship hours.

Nearby are the waterfront, the Burgazada pier, and quiet island streets with traditional residential buildings, so a visit to the mosque can easily be combined with a walk through the island's coastal area. Not far away, you can also see other characteristic corners of Burgazada connected with the island's everyday life and its maritime landscape.

You can get here by ferry from Istanbul to the Burgazada pier, after which the mosque can be reached on foot in a few minutes. Since the island is known for its calm traffic and walking-oriented leisure, this route usually does not require additional transport.
