New Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey in the Eminonu district

The New Mosque, or Yeni Cami, is located in the Eminonu district, at the entrance to the Golden Horn inlet, in the historic center of Istanbul. It is one of the city's large Ottoman mosques, clearly visible from the waterfronts, bridges, and piers. Thanks to its location near a busy square and markets, it often becomes part of walks through old Istanbul.

Construction of the mosque began at the end of the 16th century on the initiative of Safiye Sultan, but the work was interrupted for a long time and was only completed in the 17th century under Turhan Hatice Sultan. The opening of the mosque dates to the 1660s. The history of its construction is connected not only with the religious life of the city, but also with the major redevelopment of this part of Eminonu.

The building belongs to the late stage of classical Ottoman architecture. Its silhouette is formed by a central dome, a cascade of semi-domes, a spacious inner courtyard, and two minarets. Inside, attention is drawn to the tiles, calligraphic inscriptions, the high prayer hall, and the soft light passing through numerous windows.

Today, the New Mosque remains active, so both worshippers and tourists interested in the history of Istanbul and Ottoman architecture come here. A visit is conveniently combined with a walk along the Eminonu waterfront, the Spice Bazaar, and the neighboring quarters by the Galata Bridge.

Visitors come here not only for the exterior of the building, but also to see the traditional organization of Ottoman mosque space. In front of the entrance there is a courtyard with arcades and a fountain for ablutions, and in the prayer hall itself you can observe the mihrab, minbar, painted decoration, tile adornment, and the multi-tiered system of domes that creates a sense of an open and bright interior.

When visiting, it is worth keeping in mind that this is an active mosque: during prayer times, access for sightseeing may be limited, and tourists should remain quiet and choose modest clothing. Shoes are removed before entering, and women are usually required to cover their heads. The best time for a calm visit is outside prayer hours, when there are fewer visitors.

Nearby are the Egyptian Bazaar, Galata Bridge, the Eminonu piers, and the starting points of routes to Topkapi Palace, the Suleymaniye Mosque, and the quarters around the Golden Horn. The easiest way to get here is by tram line T1 to the Eminonu stop, or on foot from the piers and the bridge.
