Chorsu Eastern Bazaar

Chorsu Eastern Bazaar in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Chorsu is one of the most famous markets in Tashkent, located in the old part of the city, near Chorsu metro station. Its historical name is Eski Juva, and the word "Chorsu" is associated with the crossroads of trade routes: traditionally, this was the name given to a place at the intersection of four roads. The market still remains an important part of city life and everyday trade.

The modern bazaar brings together food and household goods stalls under a large domed pavilion and in the surrounding area. Here they sell vegetables, fruit, herbs, spices, dried fruit, nuts, meat, dairy products, flatbreads, sweets, as well as kitchen utensils, fabrics, and some handicraft items. The selection changes noticeably with the seasons: in summer there is more fresh fruit and vegetables, while in the colder months there are more dried fruits, nuts, and preserves.

For tourists, Chorsu is interesting as a functioning Eastern market rather than a stylized shopping venue. People come here not only to shop, but also to see the familiar rhythm of Tashkent trade, try local products, and notice the details of the city's everyday life. Bargaining is possible in some sections, especially in the areas selling clothing, textiles, tableware, and souvenirs.

A visit to the bazaar can easily be combined with a walk through old Tashkent. The market is suitable for those who want to get to know the urban environment outside a museum setting; however, it is better to come in the first half of the day, when the selection of goods is usually wider and many stalls are already open.

The domed market of old Tashkent with food and handicraft stalls

The main feature of Chorsu is its large domed pavilion, which is easily recognizable in the city skyline. Inside, the food stalls are usually concentrated: spices, nuts, dried fruits, dairy products, meat, and baked goods. In the surrounding areas, you can see vendors selling clothing, fabrics, tableware, household goods, and individual souvenir items.

Visitors find it convenient to come here not only for shopping, but also for local gastronomic impressions. At the market, you can look at different kinds of Uzbek flatbreads, compare varieties of rice and spices, buy dried fruits by weight, and pay attention to the everyday products chosen by local residents. If you plan to shop, it is useful to carry cash and remember that prices and product availability may differ depending on the row and the time of day.

Nearby are the districts of the old city, where you can continue your walk after visiting the market; historical mosques and other city quarters of interest for getting acquainted with the traditional part of Tashkent are also located not far away. The easiest way to get there is by metro - the market is located next to Chorsu station.

For a calmer visit, it is better to choose the morning hours, when there are more fresh goods on the counters and it is easier to look around the stalls without a dense flow of shoppers. In the hot months, it is worth considering the high temperature in the open areas of the market, and products that require cooling should be bought closer to the end of your walk.
