Damlatas Cave
Damlatas Cave in Alanya, Turkey
Damlatas Cave is located in the center of Alanya, at the foot of the fortress hill, next to Damlatas Beach and the lower station of the cable car to the fortress. Thanks to this location, it is convenient to visit during a walk along the promenade, a seaside break, or a tour of the historic part of the city. It is one of the most famous natural attractions in Alanya, accessible without leaving the resort center.
The cave was discovered in 1948 during work related to the construction of the port. Its name comes from the Turkish words damla and tas - “drop” and “stone.” It is associated with the limestone formations created by the centuries-long seepage of water through the rock. Inside, stalactites, stalagmites, and other karst formations have developed, clearly showing the natural evolution of the underground cavity.
The interior of the cave is relatively small and equipped for visitors: there is lighting, stairways, and a convenient passage to the main chamber. It is characterized by a stable microclimate with a temperature of about +22 - +23 °C throughout the year and very high humidity. For this reason, the air inside is noticeably different from the hot and dry air outside, especially in the summer season.
Today, Damlatas Cave is of interest primarily as a natural site that can easily be included in a short city route. People come here to see karst formations up close, learn about the geological features of the Mediterranean coast, and combine the visit with a ride up to the fortress, a walk along the shore, or relaxation on the nearby beach.

A visit to Damlatas Cave usually takes little time, but it allows visitors to observe karst formations from close range. Inside, the main chamber is open to the public, with uneven vaults, limestone deposits, and areas where the action of water that shaped the rock surface is especially visible. The visit follows an оборудованному route with steps and railings, making the space convenient for independent exploration.
The cave’s main feature is its humid and almost unchanging microclimate. After the heat outside, the difference is felt immediately: inside, the air is cooler and saturated with moisture. In the past, the cave was often associated with climatotherapy for respiratory conditions, but for most tourists it is above all an opportunity to see a natural underground site within the city limits.
Nearby are Damlatas Beach, the cable car to Alanya Fortress, the Alanya Archaeological Museum, and the seaside promenade area, so the visit is easy to combine with other stops in the city center. The cave is easy to reach on foot from central Alanya or by public transport and taxi to the Damlatas Beach area.
