Dim River Dam

Dim River Dam in Alanya, Turkey

The Dim River Dam is located in the mountains east of central Alanya, higher up in the Dimcay valley. The road here leads away from the coastal neighborhoods to the cooler inland part of the district, where the slopes of the Taurus Mountains surround the river and reservoir. For many, a trip to the dam is an opportunity to see the surroundings of Alanya beyond the beach strip and dense urban development.

This is a major hydraulic structure on the Dim River, created to address the region’s practical needs. The reservoir is connected with water supply, flow regulation, irrigation, and electricity generation. Therefore, the place is perceived primarily as part of modern infrastructure rather than as a historical monument or a sightseeing attraction in the usual sense.

The main interest for visitors here is the landscape. From different sections of the road and viewpoints, there are views of the water, mountain slopes, and the winding valley. In clear weather, the contrast between the coast and the inland areas is especially noticeable, where there is more greenery, rural land, and rocky slopes.

A trip to the dam is often combined with a route along the Dimcay River, stops by the water, and visits to restaurants and recreation areas farther downstream. People usually come here for a few hours to exchange the sea view for a mountain one and to see one of the important engineering structures in the surroundings of Alanya.

Mountain Reservoir and Views of the Dimcay Valley

Visitors usually do not spend much time at the dam itself, but the place is well suited for a short stop while traveling through the valley. The main attraction is the panorama of the reservoir among the slopes, the line of the dam, and the mountain road itself, which gradually climbs upward. Depending on the season, the surrounding landscape can look different: in summer it is noticeably fresher here than by the sea, while in winter and spring the slopes appear greener.

Swimming and active recreation are associated mainly not with the dam itself, but with the sections lower down in the Dimcay River valley, where waterside restaurants, places to relax, and platforms by the current are located. People usually stop at the reservoir for the views and photographs, and then continue farther along the mountain road or return to the river. It is worth keeping in mind that this is an active infrastructure facility, so access to certain sections may be restricted.

Nearby are the Dimcay Valley, the coastal districts of Kestel and Mahmutlar, as well as Dim Cave, one of the well-known natural sites in the surroundings of Alanya. The most convenient way to get here is by car or taxi from central Alanya, usually via the road through Kestel and then farther up the valley.
