Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge

Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge in Istanbul, Turkey

The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, also known as the Second Bosphorus Bridge, connects the European and Asian shores of Istanbul in the northern part of the city. It crosses the Bosphorus between the districts of Hisarustu and Kavacik and plays an important role in urban and transit road traffic.

It is a suspension bridge with a main span of about 1,090 meters and a total length of about 1,510 meters. It is easily recognized by its two tall towers and long silhouette above the strait. The structure was opened in 1988 and became the second permanent road crossing over the Bosphorus after the July 15 Martyrs Bridge.

For tourists, the bridge is primarily of interest as a prominent part of the Bosphorus panorama. It is clearly visible from waterfront viewpoints, from sightseeing boats, and from observation points in the northern part of the strait. It is especially often noticed during trips along the embankments of the European and Asian shores.

It should be noted that the bridge is intended only for cars: pedestrian and bicycle traffic is not allowed, and passage is subject to a toll. Therefore, getting acquainted with the bridge is usually associated not with walking across it, but with viewing it from the outside and traveling around the Bosphorus area.

From the side, the bridge is best perceived as an element of the urban landscape: from here, the steep shores of the strait, dense development on the hills, and busy ship traffic are visible. It looks especially impressive from the water, where you can appreciate the height of the span and the scale of the entire structure.

The bridge itself is not open for pedestrian walks, so tourists usually view it from the embankments and observation platforms. If you plan to drive across it, keep in mind that it is part of an important highway with heavy traffic, not a scenic route for stops and sightseeing.

Nearby are Rumelihisari Fortress on the European shore, Emirgan Park, and districts along the upper Bosphorus, from where it is convenient to continue exploring the northern part of Istanbul. On the Asian side, the bridge is visible from the coastal neighborhoods of Beykoz.

The most convenient way to reach the viewing points is by public transport or taxi from the Besiktas, Sariyer, and Beykoz districts, depending on the chosen shore. For views from the water, Bosphorus cruises that pass through this section of the strait are suitable.
