Girlevik Waterfall is located in the surroundings of the city of Erzincan, in the mountainous part of the province in eastern Turkey. It is one of the best-known natural attractions in the region, visited for its cool air, views of the cascades, and walks by the water. The name Girlevik usually refers not to a single vertical stream, but to a group of descending flows and ledges fed by karst springs and seasonal snowmelt.
The waterfall forms on a rocky slope, where the water drops in several streams and spreads across natural steps. Different sources give different figures for its height, most often within a range of several dozen meters. Even in summer, the water here remains cold, and at the foot of the cascades there is a damp coolness due to the constant spray.
For visitors, the site is appealing for its combination of mountain landscape, dense seasonal greenery, and convenient viewpoints. The sound of the water can be heard from afar, and from the bridges and paths it is possible to observe the individual streams from different angles. In spring and early summer, the waterfall usually appears at its fullest, while in the cold season ice sometimes forms on the rocks and in shaded areas.

At the site, visitors can walk along equipped access paths, climb to viewing points, and watch how the water divides into several streams as it passes over limestone and rocky ledges. Because of the shape of the slope, the waterfall is perceived differently from different points: from below, the force of the flow and the water mist are more noticeable, while from the side, the structure of the cascades and the distribution of the water across the rock are clearer.
The surroundings are suitable for a short walk and photography at different times of the year. In spring, the flow is usually stronger, in summer people come here for the coolness, and in winter some sections of the waterfall and the riverside rocks may be partially covered with ice. The humid microclimate is especially noticeable near the waterfall, so the surface of the paths can be wet and slippery in places.
Visitors should keep in mind that the temperature by the water is noticeably lower than in the city, and even on a warm day a light outer layer may be needed. For sightseeing, it is best to choose shoes with non-slip soles, especially if you plan to get closer to the lower cascades or walk through areas near the spray.
A trip to the waterfall can be combined with an outing around the surroundings of Erzincan and an introduction to the province’s mountain scenery. It is usually reached by road from the center of Erzincan by car or taxi, which makes the waterfall a convenient destination for a short countryside trip.
