Goynuk Canyon
Goynuk Canyon in Goynuk, Turkey
Goynuk Canyon is located near the village of Goynuk, between Kemer and Antalya, at the foot of the Taurus Mountains. It lies within the coastal mountain zone, where pine forests, limestone slopes, and the bed of a mountain river form one of the best-known natural routes in the surroundings of Kemer. Visitors come here for a walk through the gorge and the chance to see a cooler, shadier part of the coast.
The canyon’s main feature is a narrow rocky gorge with high cliff walls, shallow sections, and clear cold water. Depending on the season, the current may be calmer or stronger, so conditions on the route change. The path runs along a trail, over stones, and in some places directly through the water, while deeper inside the gorge the terrain becomes more uneven.
A visit is suitable for those ready for an active walk in nature. Tourists usually choose shoes with good grip that can get wet, and in the warmer months they bring swimwear and sun protection. The length and difficulty can be adjusted to suit different abilities: some visitors limit themselves to the beginning of the route, while others go farther into the canyon.
The canyon is interesting not only as a place for a short trip from Kemer, but also as an opportunity to see the region’s mountain landscape outside the beach area. It is often included in an itinerary together with time on the coast, since the road from Goynuk and neighboring resorts takes little time. The common explanation of the name as a translation from the Etruscan language is not confirmed; the toponym is usually associated with the Turkic linguistic tradition.

Goynuk Canyon: a gorge route and passages through the water
Mountain terrain, the shade of the rocks, and cool water come together here.
Rocky gorge with a cold river and a route through the water
The route in the canyon combines a regular walk with passages along the riverbed. At the entrance section, the trail is relatively easy, but farther on there are slippery stones, shallow water sections, and narrower passages between the rocks. Because of this, it is most convenient to wear closed, non-slip water or trekking shoes that you do not mind getting wet.
Inside the gorge, you can see sheer limestone walls, small pools, sections where the water has a turquoise tint, and shade from overhanging rocks. In hot weather, the temperature here is usually noticeably lower than by the sea, so the place is often chosen for a short break from the heat. Some visitors limit themselves to a walk to the viewpoints and convenient descents to the water, while better-prepared visitors go farther through the canyon.
Before the trip, it is useful to consider the season and water conditions: after rain and during stronger currents, the route may be more difficult. At the entrance area there is usually basic tourist infrastructure, while deeper in the canyon conditions are entirely natural, without equipped rest areas. Nearby are the resort of Goynuk, the coastal beaches, and mountain roads toward Kemer and Antalya.
The canyon is usually reached from Kemer or Goynuk by car, taxi, or as part of an excursion, and then visitors continue on foot from the entrance to the beginning of the gorge route.
