Green Canyon

Green Canyon in Manavgat, Turkey

Green Canyon is located in the Manavgat area, north of the coast of Side, in the mountainous part of Antalya Province. It is a large reservoir formed by the Oymapinar Dam on the Manavgat River. The place is known for its combination of mountain scenery, calm water, and forested slopes, which is why it is often chosen for day trips from Mediterranean resorts.

The reservoir is situated at an altitude of about 350 meters above sea level, and it is usually cooler here than by the sea. In some sections, the depth reaches about 100 meters. The water comes from the river, mountain springs, and tributaries, so the reservoir level is maintained by natural inflow, and the color of the water can vary from dark green to turquoise depending on the light and the season.

The main feature of Green Canyon is not a narrow gorge in the usual sense, but a wide expanse of water among steep banks and the Taurus Mountains. People come here for boat trips, panoramic views, stops by the water, and relaxation away from the noisy coast. In some areas designated for visitors, swimming and fishing are possible.

For tourists, this is primarily a natural location near Side and Manavgat, convenient for a trip of a few hours or a full day. The visit is often combined with exploring the surroundings of the Manavgat River, viewpoints, and mountain roads leading to the reservoir.

Green Canyon and Reservoir Boat Trips

Mountain views, fresh water, and peaceful stops by the shore come together here.

Green Canyon

Mountain reservoir with scenic viewpoints and boat routes

During a visit, people usually explore the reservoir from the water: sightseeing boats travel along rocky shores, bays, and sections where the mountains almost come right down to the water. From the deck, there are clear views of the steep Taurus slopes, stretches of pine forest, and the indented shoreline, which is especially noticeable around the bends of the canyon.

At equipped stops, tourists spend time by the water and may swim in permitted areas. Unlike the sea coast, the water here is fresh, and even in the hot season it usually feels cooler. The trip suits those who want to replace the beach routine with a calmer route featuring short stops and views of the mountain landscape.

Near Green Canyon are the Oymapinar Dam, the Green Lake reservoir, and nature routes in the upper reaches of the Manavgat River. Most often, visitors get here on excursions from Side, central Manavgat, Alanya, and nearby resorts, while an independent trip usually follows the road toward Oymapinar.
