The Hasan Pasha Caravanserai is located in the historic center of Diyarbakir, in the Sur district, near the city walls and other monuments of the old town. It is one of the best-known Ottoman buildings in the city, connected with the trading history of the region and the caravan routes of Anatolia and Upper Mesopotamia.
The complex was built in the second half of the 16th century by order of Hasan Pasha and was used as an inn for merchants, travelers, and animals. Such caravanserais were an important part of urban infrastructure: here, people could stay overnight, store goods, and rest on the road.
The building stands out for its rectangular courtyard, two-story arcades, and the characteristic combination of dark basalt and light stone typical of Diyarbakir. After restoration, the caravanserai preserved its historic forms and today remains a clearly recognizable example of urban Ottoman architecture.
Today, it is visited not only for its history but also as part of a walk through old Diyarbakir. The inner courtyard, galleries, and stonework make it easier to imagine the layout of a traditional caravanserai, while modern cafés and shops make the space a lively part of the historic quarter.

The main feature visitors notice is the spacious inner courtyard and the two-tier galleries surrounding it along the perimeter. The ground level housed spaces for trade and practical needs, while the upper tier was used to accommodate travelers. The stone masonry clearly reflects the local building tradition, in which dark basalt is combined with light inserts.
Today, cafés and small shops operate in the building, so people often come here not only for sightseeing but also to make a short stop during a walk through the Sur district. It is best to observe the details of the arches, columns, and facades from the courtyard itself, as this gives a clearer sense of the layout of the historic inn.
Nearby are the Great Mosque of Diyarbakir, the old city walls, and other landmarks of the historic center, so the caravanserai is easy to include in a walking route through the old town. The easiest way to get here is by taxi or public transport to the center of Diyarbakir, and then continue on foot through the streets of the Sur district.
