Heybeliada Island

Heybeliada Island in Istanbul, Turkey

Heybeliada Island is located in the Sea of Marmara off the coast of Istanbul and is part of the Princes' Islands archipelago. It is the second largest island in the archipelago after Buyukada. The name Heybeliada is associated with the Turkish word heybe, meaning "bag" or "saddlebag," which is usually linked to the shape of its hills.

The island's history is connected with the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Like the other Princes' Islands, in Byzantine times it was used as a place of seclusion, monastic life, and exile. Later, Heybeliada became part of the Ottoman Empire and gradually turned into one of Istanbul's suburban islands, where people came for a calmer atmosphere by the sea.

The island's landscape is formed by several hills covered with pines and other Mediterranean vegetation. Heybeliada is known for its walking roads, views of the Sea of Marmara, and a quieter atmosphere compared with the central districts of Istanbul. Near the pier stands the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas, and in different parts of the island, residential houses and public buildings from the 19th-20th centuries have been preserved.

Heybeliada is of interest to those who want to see another side of Istanbul - without intense city traffic, with sea views, historic development, and convenient routes for walking. People come here to spend a few hours by the water, explore the island neighborhoods, and combine the trip with visits to other Princes' Islands.

Pine-Covered Hills, Monastic Sites, and Walks by the Sea

On Heybeliada, people usually walk along the waterfront by the pier, go up the roads to the island's higher points, and explore residential quarters with historic development. Here you can see traditional island houses, small squares, boat piers, and quiet coves. The island is suitable for unhurried exploration on foot, and part of the routes pass in the shade of pine trees.

Among the notable places are the Church of Saint Nicholas near the port and the monastic grounds on the elevations. On one of the hills stands the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, associated with the well-known theological school on Heybeliada. These places are important to the history of Istanbul's Orthodox community and make the island interesting not only for a walk, but also for getting acquainted with the region's religious heritage.

There are cafes and restaurants on the island, especially in the pier area and on the coastal streets, so it is convenient to combine the trip with lunch or a coffee stop by the water. Other Princes' Islands are nearby, especially Buyukada and Burgazada, which are often included in one sea excursion.

Heybeliada is reached by sea - regular ferries and city sea services depart from different parts of Istanbul, including piers on the European and Asian sides. Before the trip, it is better to check the schedule, as it depends on the season and the day of the week.
