Sedef Island
Sedef Island in the Princes' Islands, Istanbul, Turkey
Sedef Island is a small island in the Princes' Islands archipelago in the Sea of Marmara, south of central Istanbul. It is the southernmost island in the group, known for its quieter atmosphere and limited accessibility. Its Turkish name, Sedefada, is usually translated as "mother-of-pearl island."
Sedef Island is small in size, and a significant part of its territory is occupied by private development, so the space open for free public access here is smaller than on the neighboring islands. Nevertheless, people come here for the sea views, swimming in season, and a more secluded atmosphere compared with Buyukada or Heybeliada.
Like the other Princes' Islands, Sedef Island was associated with the practice of exile in Byzantine times, although today the island is perceived primarily as a quiet place for a short trip by the water. The terrain here is low, with a high point of about 55 meters above sea level, so the island has several viewing areas overlooking the Sea of Marmara and the neighboring islands.
Sedef Island may interest those who are already familiar with the more visited Princes' Islands and want to see a less crowded part of the archipelago. Before traveling, it is worth bearing in mind that sea connections here are less regular and depend on the season, so it is best to check ferry schedules from Istanbul in advance.

Suitable for a short stop by the sea and swimming in season.
A small island with beach platforms and sea views
On Sedef Island, visitors usually spend a few hours by the water: the island has equipped recreation areas, including beach platforms where you can swim and sunbathe during the warm season. Part of the coastal infrastructure belongs to private facilities, so visiting conditions and admission may vary depending on the season.
The island is suitable for a leisurely walk along its few accessible roads and paths. Because of its small area, it is easy to explore without long walks, and from the open stretches of coastline you can see the Sea of Marmara, the neighboring Princes' Islands, and passing vessels. The island is also home to the Port Sedef restaurant with its own coastal area.
If you are planning a trip around the archipelago, Sedef Island is conveniently combined with a visit to Buyukada, Heybeliada, or Burgazada, where there are more historic buildings, walking routes, and public spaces. Unlike them, this island is chosen not for a large number of attractions, but for a short seaside break.
You can get here by sea transport from Istanbul, but services do not run as regularly as to the larger islands, so it is better to check the schedule in advance before departure.
