Holy Dormition Cathedral

Holy Dormition Cathedral in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Holy Dormition Cathedral is located in Tashkent, not far from the central part of the city, on the grounds of the Orthodox spiritual and administrative center on Avliyoota Street. It is the main church of the Tashkent and Uzbekistan Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church and one of the best-known Orthodox cathedrals in the capital of Uzbekistan.

The history of the cathedral dates back to the 19th century. The first church on this site was built in 1871, and later rebuilt and consecrated in honor of Saint Panteleimon. During the Soviet period, the church was closed, and for some time the building was used for other purposes, but after the war services resumed here, and the church received its current status as a cathedral.

The cathedral’s modern appearance took shape through several stages of reconstruction in the second half of the 20th century and in the early 1990s. For visitors, it is not only an active church but also an important historical landmark connected with the Orthodox community of Tashkent. Tourists come here to see the cathedral’s architecture, its interior decoration, and the calmer, more contemplative atmosphere compared with the busy streets of the city.

Visitors can see the church complex with its distinctive bell tower, which stands out in the surrounding cityscape, and the well-kept grounds around the cathedral. Inside, attention is usually drawn to the icons, wall paintings, and the layout of the Orthodox interior, and during services it is possible to become acquainted with the traditions of local church life. When visiting, it is worth keeping in mind that this is an active church, so clothing and behavior should be appropriate.

The cathedral is interesting because its history reflects different stages in the life of the city: from pre-revolutionary Tashkent through the Soviet period to the present day. It is connected with the development of the Orthodox community in Uzbekistan and remains an important religious center for believers. Even for those who do not come for pilgrimage purposes, the site may be of interest as part of Tashkent’s historical and cultural landscape.

Nearby are the streets and blocks of central Tashkent, so a visit to the cathedral can easily be combined with a walk through the city and sightseeing at other urban attractions. You can get here by taxi or public transport from the center of Tashkent, checking the nearest stop to Avliyoota Street.
