Karanlik Canyon
Karanlik Canyon in Erzincan, Turkey
Karanlik Canyon, also known as the Dark Canyon, is located in Erzincan Province on the Karasu River, one of the upper branches of the Euphrates. It is one of the region's most notable natural sites, where the riverbed runs between very high and steep rock walls. The name is connected to the fact that some sections of the gorge remain without direct sunlight for long periods.
The canyon stands out for its dramatic relief, narrow passage between the rocks, and great depth. In some places, the height of the slopes reaches about 1,000 meters, so the landscape here looks especially striking. The combination of water, stone, and the tight gorge makes this part of the Karasu Valley one of the most expressive in the surroundings of Erzincan.
People come here for the canyon views, drives along the rock massif on the Tasyol road, and trips on the river. The place is of interest to those who want to see less developed natural areas of Eastern Turkey and spend time away from the urban environment. At the same time, the conditions here are more suitable for calm sightseeing and photography than for a long stay with developed tourist infrastructure.
Karanlik Canyon is usually included in a route through the natural attractions of Erzincan. It attracts visitors not with historical monuments, but with the scale of its relief, the unusual shape of the gorge, and the opportunity to see one of the most characteristic river canyons in this region of Turkey.

Karanlik Canyon and a trip through the Karasu Valley
Here you can see a deep gorge and a road running along the cliffs.
A narrow river gorge with cliffs up to one kilometer high
The main thing visitors notice is the shape of the canyon itself: steep stone walls, the compressed course of the Karasu, and long stretches where light appears only at certain hours. As you move along the gorge, the views constantly change, so even a short stop at a viewpoint gives a different impression of its scale.
One of the most famous ways to explore the area is to drive along the Tasyol road, laid out beside the rock massif. This road is known for its narrow sections and its closeness to sheer cliffs, so the route itself is considered part of the travel experience. Depending on the season and river conditions, boat trips on the Karasu are also organized here, allowing visitors to see the canyon from below, at water level.
For walking, the surroundings and viewing sections near the road are more suitable than the narrow riverbed of the canyon itself. It is worth keeping in mind that the terrain is mountainous, infrastructure is limited, and on some stretches comfortable shoes and caution near the edges of the slopes are important. Other natural sites of the Karasu Valley and mountain areas of Erzincan Province are located nearby and are sometimes combined into one trip.
People usually get here from the city of Erzincan by car or as part of a local tour, since having transport makes visiting the canyon more convenient. Before the trip, it is useful to check the road conditions and weather, especially if a route along Tasyol is planned.
