Lake Aydarkul
Lake Aydarkul in Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Lake Aydarkul is located in the central part of Uzbekistan, in the Nurata area and on the edge of the Kyzylkum Desert. Despite its association with Samarkand in tourist routes, the lake is not located in the city or near its center, but at a considerable distance to the northwest. It is a large body of water within the Aydar-Arnasay lake system, which also includes Arnasay and Tuzkan.
Aydarkul has an artificial origin. The modern lake began to form in the second half of the 20th century after the redistribution of the Syr Darya flow and the discharge of water into the Arnasay lowland. On the site of the present lake, there were previously salt flats and seasonally flooded depressions, which over time turned into a stable lake area.
For travelers, Aydarkul is interesting for its combination of water and desert landscape. Here you can see an extended shoreline, open steppe and semi-desert spaces, as well as observe birds associated with aquatic environments. The lake is also known as a fishing area: carp, pike-perch, catfish, and other fish species are found in its waters.
Aydarkul is suitable for those who want to see lesser-known natural areas of Uzbekistan beyond the historic cities. People come here for a peaceful отдых in nature, trips to yurt camps, and to experience the contrast between the body of water and the surrounding arid terrain. When planning a trip, it is important to take into account the remoteness, weather conditions, and limited tourist infrastructure along certain parts of the shore.

Lake Aydarkul: waterside relaxation, fishing, and yurt camps
People come here for the water, the desert landscape, and an overnight stay by the shore.

The shores of Aydarkul differ noticeably in character: in some areas, they are gentle sandy and clay approaches to the water, while in others they are open spaces with sparse vegetation and wide views of the lake. Swimming is not equally convenient everywhere, so a place to stop is usually chosen in advance, especially if the trip includes an overnight stay. In the warm season, people often come here to relax by the water and take short trips around the surroundings.
The lake also attracts birdwatchers and fishing enthusiasts. Waterfowl and near-water species can be seen around the lake, and seasonal bird activity changes throughout the year. Anglers come here for carp, pike-perch, catfish, and other species, but fishing conditions depend on the specific section of the shore, the time of year, and the water level.
The most common format for visiting is a trip with a stay at a yurt camp by the shore, where you can spend the night and see the night sky far from city lights. Nearby are the Nuratau Mountains and settlements in the Nurata district, which are sometimes included in the same route together with the lake.
Aydarkul is usually reached by car from Samarkand, Bukhara, or Nurata; public transport to the shore itself is limited, so it is usually more convenient to travel with a driver or as part of a tour. Before the trip, it is worth checking the road conditions and accommodation options at the selected section of the coast.
