Marmaris Old Castle

Marmaris Old Castle in Marmaris, Turkey

Marmaris Old Castle is located in the center of Marmaris, on a hill above the harbor and the streets of the old town. It is one of the few places in the city where the connection between the ancient past of the coast and the Ottoman period can be clearly seen. Early legends about the fortress having an extremely ancient origin do not have reliable confirmation; however, it is known that fortifications existed on this site long ago, and the complex mainly acquired its current appearance in the 16th century during preparations for the Ottoman campaign against Rhodes.

The castle is relatively compact, but it is interesting for its location and preserved layout. The stone walls, inner courtyards, and bastions rise above the bay, so people come here not only for the history, but also for the panoramic views of the port, promenade, and buildings of Marmaris. The climb to the castle passes through the narrow streets of the old town, where a more intimate atmosphere has been preserved than in the coastal part of the resort.

Inside is the Marmaris Museum. The exhibition includes archaeological finds from the surrounding area, amphorae, items from the ancient, Hellenistic, Roman, and Ottoman periods, as well as materials telling the history of the region. Thanks to the museum, a visit to the castle becomes not only a walk to a viewpoint, but also an opportunity to better understand the past of the southwestern coast of Turkey.

Today, Marmaris Old Castle is of interest to those who want to see the historic part of the city beyond the beaches and promenade. It is worth keeping in mind that the road here goes uphill, and inside there are stairs, uneven stone, and changes in elevation, so it is better to choose comfortable shoes for the walk.

When visiting the castle, you can walk through the inner passages and small courtyards, climb to sections of the wall, and explore the bastions, which offer different views of the yacht harbor, piers, and bay. The space is not very large, so it is convenient to explore it without rushing, combining the museum visit with a walk around the grounds.

The museum halls are located in the historic rooms of the castle. Ceramics, amphorae, archaeological finds from the Marmaris area and neighboring ancient settlements, as well as Ottoman-era objects are usually displayed here. Part of the exhibition helps visitors imagine what a traditional residential interior looked like, which adds an everyday context to the story of the defensive structure.

Nearby are Marmaris old town, the promenade, the harbor with sightseeing boats, and several small streets with cafes and shops. Therefore, a visit to the castle is easy to combine with a walk through the historic quarter and a trip down to the sea.

The castle is usually reached on foot from the central part of Marmaris and from the promenade, after which there is a short but noticeable climb along narrow streets and steps. During the hottest part of the day, it is worth bringing water and keeping in mind that some sections may be slippery or inconvenient for people with limited mobility.
