Marmaris Old Town

Marmaris Old Town in Marmaris, Turkey

Marmaris Old Town is located at the foot of the fortress, next to the waterfront and the port area of the city. It is a small historic quarter where a more traditional urban setting has been preserved, noticeably different from the modern areas of the resort. People come here to walk along the narrow streets, see the old residential buildings, and get a sense of what Marmaris looked like before active tourism development.

The area is known for its white houses, small inner courtyards, stairways, and characteristic details of Mediterranean and Ottoman architecture. The streets here are quite narrow and uneven in places, so the walk tends to be unhurried. Small shops, workshops, cafes, and stores selling local goods and souvenirs operate in the old buildings.

A walk through the Old Town is often combined with a visit to Marmaris Fortress, which rises above the quarter and is connected with the Ottoman period of the city's history. Nearby is also the tomb of Saryana, a revered local figure about whom urban legends have been preserved. These places help to better understand the historic character of Marmaris beyond the beaches and the modern marina.

The Old Town is interesting for those who want to see not only the resort part of Marmaris, but also an older urban layer. The area is convenient for a short walk on foot, especially if combined with a visit to the fortress, the harbor, and the central waterfront. People usually come here for the atmosphere of the old streets, panoramic views from the upper part of the quarter, and a calm introduction to the historic part of the city.

In Marmaris Old Town, the main impression is created not by individual monuments, but by the structure of the quarter itself: winding passageways, stone steps, low houses with wooden shutters, and spots where views of the bay open up. It is pleasant to walk here without rushing, looking into small courtyards and stopping at viewpoints between the houses. Photographers are especially interested in the contrasts between the old buildings and the modern port line below.

Many visitors go up to Marmaris Fortress, where a museum exhibition is housed and views open over the city, the yacht marina, and the bay. In the lower part of the quarter, you can stop at small cafes or visit shops with ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and other items made by local artisans. In the evening, the area becomes livelier, but even then it usually retains a more intimate atmosphere than the waterfront.

If you have time, you can also see the tomb of Saryana nearby, walk to the port, and continue your stroll through the central part of Marmaris. Old Town is usually reached on foot from the center and the waterfront, and from other parts of the city by dolmus or taxi to the fortress and harbor area.
