Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

Mausoleum at Halicarnassus - archaeological site in the city center, Turkey

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus is located in the central part of the city, on the site of ancient Halicarnassus. This was where the tomb of the Carian ruler Mausolus once stood, giving rise to the word “mausoleum” in many languages around the world. The monument is counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, although today the site mainly preserves archaeological remains.

Construction began in the 4th century BC, shortly before the death of Mausolus, and was completed under Artemisia II. According to ancient descriptions and later reconstructions, it was a large marble tomb with a colonnade, reliefs, sculptures, and a stepped top crowned by a quadriga. The architecture of the mausoleum combined elements of Greek, Carian, and Near Eastern traditions, which made it especially remarkable for its time.

In the Middle Ages, the monument was severely damaged by earthquakes, and some of its stone was later used in the construction of Bodrum Castle of St. Peter. In the 19th century, excavations helped clarify the layout of the structure and uncovered fragments of its decorative features. Many of these finds are now in the British Museum, while on site visitors can see the foundation, wall remains, and individual architectural details.

For tourists, this is above all an important archaeological site, where it is easier to imagine the scale of ancient Halicarnassus and understand what one of the most famous monuments of antiquity looked like. A visit is usually especially interesting for those who want to see not a reconstruction, but the authentic site with its historical context, located close to other well-known landmarks in central Bodrum.
