National Railway Museum in Camlik

National Railway Museum in Camlik

National Railway Museum in Camlik in Izmir, Turkey

The National Railway Museum in Camlik is located in the village of Camlik near Selcuk, in Izmir Province. It is an open-air museum dedicated to the history of railways in Turkey and the development of steam traction. It is often visited during trips around Selcuk, where Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary, and other well-known landmarks of the region are located.

The main part of the exhibition consists of steam locomotives, tenders, carriages, and railway service equipment that came to Turkey from different countries. On the grounds, visitors can also see elements of railway infrastructure: semaphores, turntables, water cranes, and other technical objects connected with depot work and train servicing. Thanks to this, the museum gives an idea not only of the locomotives themselves, but also of the everyday organization of railway operations in the steam era.

A special feature of the museum is that most of the collection is displayed directly on the tracks in the open air. The exhibits can be viewed from close range, with attention to the size of the machines, the design of the wheelsets, boilers, cabs, and coupling mechanisms. This arrangement makes the museum understandable both for those who are specifically interested in transport history and for ordinary travelers who want to see the equipment at real scale.

The museum is suitable for those who want to add a less obvious but meaningful stop to the ancient landmarks of Selcuk. A visit usually does not require much time; however, it is worth keeping in mind that most of the route is outdoors, so before visiting it is useful to check the opening hours and prepare for the sun in the warm season.

Collection of steam locomotives and railway-era equipment in the open air

The museum features a large collection of steam locomotives from different series and periods, as well as accompanying equipment that was used on Turkey's railways. Visitors can see differences in locomotive design, tender shapes, types of carriages, and engineering details that are usually difficult to examine in closed museum halls. In the open-air setting, the scale of the equipment and the specifics of its operation are especially clear.

The exhibition is interesting not only for the machines themselves, but also for the railway environment as a whole. Signal devices, track switch elements, turning mechanisms, and equipment related to water supply and locomotive maintenance are presented here. As a result, the museum helps explain how a railway junction operated before the spread of modern forms of traction.

The grounds are convenient for a leisurely visit and photography, as many exhibits are placed on separate tracks and are clearly visible from different sides. Near Camlik are ancient Ephesus, the Ephesus Museum in Selcuk, and the Basilica of Saint John, so a visit to the museum can easily be combined with other stops in this area.

Visitors usually come here from Selcuk by car or taxi, as the museum is located outside the center and is most conveniently reached by road in the direction of Camlik. Before traveling, it is worth checking the opening schedule, as visiting conditions may change by season.
