Old Mosque

Old Mosque in Edirne, Turkey

The Old Mosque in Edirne is located in the historic center of the city, not far from the main shopping streets and other monuments from the Ottoman period. It is one of the earliest and best-preserved large Ottoman mosques in the city, built at the beginning of the 15th century, when Edirne played an important role as the capital of the state.

The building is distinguished by a strict and massive appearance, characteristic of early Ottoman architecture. The mosque is built of stone and covered with several large domes, and its exterior conveys an impression of restraint and unity. The architecture does not yet have the complex composition that would later appear in Edirne's more famous monuments, but this is precisely what makes the structure especially interesting for understanding the early stage of Ottoman architecture.

The main feature of the interior is the large inscriptions of Arabic calligraphy on the walls and supports. They stand out clearly against the restrained interior decoration and are considered one of the mosque's most recognizable details. Inside, it is worth paying attention to the spacious prayer hall, the massive columns, and the overall character of the design, in which architectural form is more important than decorative richness.

Today, the Old Mosque remains an active religious building and offers the opportunity to see an important monument of Edirne's history in its natural urban setting. It can easily be included in a walk through the city center together with markets, caravanserais, and other historic mosques.

When visiting the Old Mosque, attention is usually immediately drawn to the interior space with its large domes and massive supports. There is no abundance of ornament here, but the building's structure and the overall style of the early Ottoman period are clearly visible. For visitors, this is an opportunity to see what large urban mosques looked like before the appearance of more complex planned buildings.

Large examples of Islamic calligraphy have been preserved on the walls and structural elements, becoming the main visual focus of the interior. It is best to observe them slowly while moving around the perimeter of the prayer hall. When visiting, it is worth keeping in mind that this is an active mosque: modest clothing is usually required, and sightseeing may be limited during prayer times.

The Old Mosque is especially convenient for those exploring the historic center of Edirne on foot. Nearby are the Ali Pasha Covered Bazaar, the Uc Serefeli Mosque, and other monuments of the old city, so a visit can easily be combined with a walk through the central part of Edirne.

The easiest way to get here is on foot from the center of Edirne, as the mosque is located in the heart of the historic urban area. If you are arriving by transport, it is most convenient to use the central streets and the market in the old part of the city as reference points.
