Selimiye Mosque

Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, Turkey

Selimiye Mosque is located in the center of Edirne and remains the main architectural landmark of the city's historic district. It was built in the 16th century by order of Sultan Selim II, and the project was designed by Mimar Sinan, the leading Ottoman architect of his time. Today it is an active mosque and one of the most famous monuments in Edirne.

The structure stands out for its large central dome, four tall minarets, and especially the cohesive organization of its interior space. From the outside, the mosque is clearly visible in the city skyline, while inside, attention is drawn to the bright prayer hall, the mihrab, the minbar, calligraphic inscriptions, and decorative finishes. The architecture of Selimiye is often regarded as one of Sinan's most mature works.

The mosque complex was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011. For tourists, it is an important place not only because of its historical status, but also as a clear example of how engineering precision, carefully considered proportions, and the religious purpose of the building were combined in Ottoman architecture. Even a short visit allows for a better understanding of Edirne's appearance during the Ottoman period.

Nearby are the streets of the old center, historic shopping districts, and other monuments from the Ottoman era. When visiting, it is worth remembering that the mosque is still in active use for its original purpose: it is best to come outside prayer times, choose modest clothing, and maintain silence. Admission is usually free, but during prayers or restoration work, part of the space may be temporarily closed.

When exploring the mosque, it is especially noticeable how the interior space is organized around one large dome: the supports are positioned so that the hall feels open and easy to take in. This creates a sense of unity that is rare in such a large building. Inside, it is worth paying attention to the stone carving, the tile decoration of certain elements, the mihrab, the minbar pulpit, and the placement of the windows, thanks to which light is distributed evenly throughout the hall.

The mosque is interesting not only as a standalone building, but also as part of a broader Ottoman complex. Historically, religious and educational buildings stood nearby, and the surrounding area is still connected to the life of the old city. It is best to explore Selimiye at a leisurely pace, walking around it from different sides: this gives a clear view of the proportions of the dome, the bases of the minarets, and the architect's overall concept.

Visitors are usually allowed to enter outside prayer times. Shoes must be removed before entering, and clothing should cover the shoulders and knees; women may need a scarf to cover their heads. Photography is usually allowed as long as it does not disturb worshippers, but it is worth checking the rules on site.

The Ali Pasha Covered Bazaar, the streets of Edirne's old center, and other Ottoman monuments are just a few minutes' walk away. The mosque is easy to reach on foot from the central part of the city, as it is located in the very center of Edirne.
