Oymapinar Dam
Oymapinar Dam in Side, Turkey
Oymapinar Dam is located north of Side, in the mountainous part of the Manavgat district, on the Manavgat River. It is a large concrete arch dam spanning a narrow gorge and forming a reservoir that tourists usually know as Green Canyon. The structure is one of the notable engineering landmarks of southern Turkey and is well known for its panoramic views of the water and the canyon slopes.
The dam was built at the end of the 20th century to generate electricity and regulate water resources. Its height is about 185 meters, and its crest length is about 454 meters. A hydroelectric power plant operates at the dam, so the site primarily retains economic importance, while tourist interest is mainly connected with the surrounding landscape and viewpoints.
For visitors, Oymapinar is interesting for its combination of engineering scale and natural surroundings. From here, there are views of the greenish reservoir water, steep limestone slopes, and winding sections of the canyon. Most people come here not for the dam itself, but for walks and viewpoints around the reservoir, from which the structure and the river valley can be seen especially well.
When visiting, it is worth keeping in mind that this is an active infrastructure facility, so access to certain areas may be restricted. On site, it is best to follow the current access rules and signs. For a trip from Side and central Manavgat, the dam is usually considered part of the route to Green Canyon and the upper reaches of the Manavgat River.

The best impressions here are connected with the viewpoints around the reservoir. From different sections of the road, you can see how the dam is built into a narrow mountain gorge, while below and above the flow there are wide views of calm water, forested slopes, and an indented shoreline. On the crest, you can notice the large letters DSI, marking the Turkish State Hydraulic Works.
Tourists usually combine exploring the surroundings of the dam with boat trips through Green Canyon or stops at panoramic viewpoints. The main interest is not in visiting the technical facilities, but in the overall view of the dam and the reservoir. Access directly to the crest or to the adjacent service areas may vary, since the site continues to be used for the operation of the hydroelectric power plant.
Nearby are routes through Green Canyon, waterside recreation areas, and some countryside restaurants with views of the reservoir. A trip here is often combined with a visit to Manavgat, the Manavgat River, or other natural spots deeper in the district, farther from the coast of Side.
The most convenient way to get here is by car, taxi, or an organized tour from Side or central Manavgat. The road goes into the mountains, so there are many bends on some sections, and it is better to stop for views only in permitted places.
