Pigeon Island

Pigeon Island in Kusadasi, Turkey

Pigeon Island, or Guvercinada, is located off the coast of Kusadasi and is considered one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. The small island lies near the center of Kusadasi and is connected to the shore by a causeway, so people usually come here on foot during a walk along the waterfront.

The main feature on the island is a historic fortress with defensive walls. The fortifications on this stretch of coast were used during the Ottoman period to protect the harbor and control approaches from the sea. Thanks to its position at the entrance to the port, the island retained strategic importance for the city for a long time.

Today, people come here primarily for a walk and for panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, the port, and the built-up area of Kusadasi. There are paths, places to rest, and open areas from which it is convenient to observe the coastline and photograph the city from the water.

Pigeon Island is suitable for those who want to combine a short walk with visiting a historic site without a long trip. It is often included in a route around central Kusadasi together with the waterfront, the port area, and the nearby city neighborhoods.

Pigeon Island: fortress and a walk by the harbor

Here you can combine visiting the fortifications with a walk by the sea.

Fortress walls and views of Kusadasi Harbor

On the island, you can see the outer fortifications, walk along the walls, and look out over the harbor from several viewpoints. The area is small, so a visit usually does not take much time, but it allows you to see how the port entrance is arranged and how the historic defenses were connected to the shoreline.

In addition to the fortress, there are walking paths and landscaped areas suitable for a quiet stop by the sea. Visitors usually walk around the perimeter of the island, watch the vessels in the bay, and view the coast of Kusadasi from an unusual angle. It is best to come in clear weather, when the view of the sea and the city is especially open.

Nearby are the Kusadasi waterfront, the port, and the central streets of the city, so a visit to the island can easily be combined with a walk through the city center. Getting here is simple: from the center of Kusadasi, you need to walk toward the shore and cross to the island via the causeway.
