Salepcioglu Mosque
Salepcioglu Mosque in Izmir, Turkey
Salepcioglu Mosque is located in central Izmir, not far from Konak Square and the historic Kemeralti district. It is an urban mosque from the early 20th century, built at the initiative of Haci Ahmet Efendi from the Salepcioglu family. Thanks to its location near busy streets and the market, it naturally fits into a walk through the old part of the city.
The building belongs to the late Ottoman period. Its exterior combines a traditional domed composition with later decorative techniques from the early 20th century. Small domes stand out in the entrance section, and stone and marble were used in the facade decoration, giving the building an elegant yet restrained appearance.
Inside there is a square prayer hall beneath the main dome. The interior is decorated with ornaments and carved details, with red, green, and brown tones noticeable in the color scheme. Light enters through two rows of windows, so the space appears fairly open and well lit for a monument of this scale.
For tourists, Salepcioglu Mosque is of interest both as part of the historic development of central Izmir and as an example of late Ottoman religious architecture. It is usually visited while exploring Konak Square, Kemeralti Bazaar, and other city landmarks located nearby.

When visiting, it is worth paying attention to the relationship of the volumes: the large central dome, three small domes at the entrance, and the slender minaret create a recognizable silhouette among the dense urban development. The decoration features stone, colored marble, and decorative elements characteristic of its time.
Inside, visitors can see the mihrab, a marble minbar with a geometric pattern, and ornamental decoration in the domed space. Visits are possible outside prayer times and with the usual rules for an active mosque observed: modest clothing is required, and during services tourists should avoid disturbing worshippers.
The mosque is easy to include in an itinerary around central Izmir: Konak Square, the Clock Tower, Kemeralti Market, and the waterfront are all within a few minutes' walk. This makes it a convenient stop while exploring the city's historic core.
The easiest way to get here is by metro, tram, or ferry to the Konak district, and then walk a few minutes toward Kemeralti.
