Sirince Village

Sirince Village in Izmir, Turkey

Sirince is located in the Selcuk district of Izmir Province, about 8 km from Selcuk, in a hilly area among orchards, vineyards, and olive groves. It is a small historic village that is often included in a trip around the Ephesus area. People come here to walk through the old buildings, enjoy the rural landscape, and experience a calmer atmosphere compared with the larger tourist centers on the coast.

The modern appearance of Sirince is largely associated with 19th-century architecture. The village has preserved two-story houses with whitewashed facades, wooden details, and tiled roofs, while the layout of narrow streets reflects the old structure of the settlement. Historically, Sirince was also inhabited by a Greek community, and this is noticeable in the character of the local buildings and the overall appearance of the village.

The main interest here is connected not with one individual monument, but with the village's complete historic setting. People usually explore the village on foot: the streets are narrow, in places paved and quite steep, so it is worth choosing comfortable shoes. Along the way, there are views of the slopes, vineyards, and roofs of old houses, while in the central part there are small cafes, craft shops, and stores selling local products.

Sirince is also known for its local gastronomic products sold in small family-run shops: fruit wines, jam, dried fruits, spices, olive oil, and homemade-style sauces. The village is often visited together with ancient Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary, and the museums of Selcuk. Due to its popularity, the central streets can be crowded in the middle of the day and on weekends, especially in high season.

Sirince Village - a walk through the hills and old streets

Here, 19th-century houses, narrow streets, and a rural way of life have been preserved.

Narrow streets, old houses, and rural views on the hills

A walk through Sirince usually begins at the central square and continues along the streets climbing upward, where residential houses, small shops, and old public buildings are located. It is convenient here to simply walk without a strict route, turning into side streets and stopping at viewing spots between the houses. Because of the terrain, some of the climbs are quite steep, so the pace of the walk is usually unhurried.

In the village, you can visit small shops with regional products, taste local wines, and buy edible souvenirs. Cafes and family-run restaurants usually serve Aegean and homemade Turkish cuisine. In addition to the shopping streets, the details of the everyday setting are also interesting: wooden shutters, inner courtyards, stone staircases, old doors, and the traditional organization of space on the slope.

For a calmer visit, it is better to come in the morning or closer to the evening, when there are fewer tour groups. In the hot months, it is useful to have water and shoes with non-slip soles, as the street surfaces are uneven in places. If you plan to shop, it is worth keeping in mind that the selection in the stores may differ noticeably from one place to another, especially when it comes to homemade products.

A trip to Sirince is often combined with visits to Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary, the Basilica of Saint John, and the Ephesus Archaeological Museum in Selcuk. The village is usually reached by car, taxi, or local transport from Selcuk, and the journey takes about 15-20 minutes.
