Soli-Pompeiopolis in Mersin, Turkey - Ancient Ruins by the Sea

Soli-Pompeiopolis is an archaeological site on the coast of Mersin, in the Kargipinari area, west of the city center. These are the ruins of the ancient city of Soli, which in the Roman era became known as Pompeiopolis. Thanks to its location by the sea, it long remained an important port and trading center of Cilicia.

Today, the site is of interest primarily for the remains of its Roman layout. The most prominent element of the complex is the colonnaded street with surviving columns, through which one can imagine the scale of the ancient city. The site also preserves fragments of the port area, baths, a necropolis, and individual architectural details found during excavations.

Soli-Pompeiopolis attracts those who want to see ancient ruins not in a museum hall, but in an urban setting by the sea. The place is usually chosen for a მშვიდ прогулка and to discover the history of Mersin outside the busiest tourist routes. It is best to come here with an interest in archaeology and with the expectation of a leisurely exploration of the preserved remains.

Colonnaded Street and the Ruins of an Ancient Port City

On the site, the line of the main street framed by rows of columns is the clearest feature. It is this that helps to understand the structure of the Roman city and remains the most photogenic part of the excavations. In different parts of the area, you can notice the foundations of structures, stone blocks, fragments of walls, and other traces of urban development.

A visit usually takes place on foot through the open archaeological zone. There is no sense of an isolated museum here: the ancient remains stand next to modern buildings, and this especially clearly shows how the ancient heritage has been preserved within present-day Mersin. For the visit, it is worth choosing comfortable shoes and taking the hot weather in the warm season into account, as there is little shade on the site.

Nearby are the Mersin waterfront, the urban beach area, and other coastal spots that are convenient to combine with the trip. You can get here from the center of Mersin by car, taxi, or local transport toward the western districts and Kargipinari.
