Suleymaniye Mosque
Suleymaniye Mosque in Alanya, Turkey
Suleymaniye Mosque is located in the upper part of Alanya Castle, above Alanya’s city center and the Mediterranean coast. It is part of the historic citadel complex and is one of the monuments through which it is easy to trace how the city changed from the Seljuk period to Ottoman times. People usually come here while walking along the fortress walls, old streets, and viewpoints.
The first mosque on this site was built in the 13th century, when Alanya was of great importance to the Seljuk state. Later, the structure fell into disrepair, and in the 16th century it was rebuilt during the Ottoman period, after which the mosque became known as Suleymaniye. In some sources, other names are also found - Aladdin Mosque or Fortress Mosque.
The building stands out for its calm and concise architecture. The mosque has a rectangular plan, stone walls, a simply shaped minaret, and wooden elements in the interior. One of its well-known features is the good acoustics of the prayer hall, thanks to which sound spreads evenly and clearly inside.
For tourists, the mosque is interesting not only as an active religious building, but also as part of the well-preserved historical setting of old Alanya. It is suitable for those who want to see not a separate monument, but a complete fragment of the fortress city with its architecture, views of the harbor, and traces of different historical eras.

Ottoman reconstruction within a Seljuk fortress
When visiting the mosque, it is worth paying attention not only to the building itself, but also to its position within the fortress space. It stands among the old buildings of the citadel, where narrow roads, stone walls, and the hillside terrain help to better imagine the layout of medieval Alanya. Inside, the restrained decoration typical of small historic mosques has been preserved, so people more often come here for the architectural context and the atmosphere of the old fortified city.
If the mosque is open to visitors, you can see the prayer hall inside and notice its acoustic features. When entering, the usual rules for active places of worship should be observed: clothing should be modest, shoes are removed before entry, and during prayer tourists should avoid disturbing worshippers. Women may need a headscarf, especially during times of religious activity.
A visit to the mosque can easily be combined with a walk around Alanya Castle, where the inner citadel walls, old residential quarters, viewpoints, and, not far away, the Ehmedek Mosque and other historic parts of the fortress complex are located. From the upper points near the mosque, there are views of Alanya’s city center, the port, and the coastline.
People usually get here from central Alanya by taxi, excursion transport, or via the road leading up to the fortress; many cover part of the route on foot. The ascent is noticeable in places, so for a walk in this part of the fortress it is more convenient to choose non-slip shoes and take the daytime heat into account.
